I'm trying to get active again. I'm just the type of person that has to have someone pushing them, it's how I am. If I have someone saying, "Hey, we need to head to LaHaye" then I do it. If not, I convince myself I'll go later, and I'll go later, and I'll go later, then it's just time to go to bed.

I don't go to LaHaye at night. I refuse to. It turns into a social event then. I like going around noon after I get out of classes and it's practically empty.

I walk my dog 1-2 miles several times a week, but I'd really like to start running again (I did 2 of LU's 4-miler races several years ago). Also, if anyone wants to bike the Blackwater Creek Trail, I'm definitely up for that. I'm seriously thinking about getting a membership to LaHaye for the summer to work out there and play some basketball.

do you suppose the fact that you're 700 lbs has anything to do with those "heel spurs"?

I've had em since before I gained weight. I've had heel, ankle, shin, and knee problems since middle school. I grew so fast when I was younger (5'6 at the age of 10, 5'11 by the age of 12/13) that the rest of me wasn't ready for it. Ever since I've had heel spurs or shin splints and have hurt my knees/ankles on many occasions.

I laughed out loud at that. Most mornings I can barely make it home to get in bed after my shift. I'm practically asleep when I walk out of here most mornings. I do plan on hitting the gym in the afternoons after I wake up now that we have the Y membership, though.

Fumble, I'd be up for that. Do you know if LaHaye is open those hours?

I can't believe I missed out on the "XC isn't athletic" debate last night! Sheesh, you sign off and look what happens!

To throw in my .02, there is no excercise like running. I would have a hard time keeping a straight face in front of anyone who said that it isn't athletic. I am 27. I cycle once or twice a week, but mainly just run. Lifting? Uh..well, not so much. I hate to admit this, but I eat garbage. I am 6'0", I weigh 165, and my resting heart rate is just under 40 bpm. I challenge you to find any former football players who can say the same. I said this in another thread, but it is worth repeating. Cross Country is a sport. Everything else is just guys playing with balls.

Wow i figured this topic would generate 1-2 posts....not 1-2 pages per day.

Anyway i have lost 25 pounds since Jan 1 without doing ANY cardio. I just stopped eating garbage, stopped drinking soda, and cut down on my sugar intake. I have done a lot of situps, pushups and a bit of lifting. However i want to keep in off. I know once all the sports seasons start ill be doing a lot of sitting and eating again if i don't get in some different habits now. Plus like some of you i also sit and talk on the phone all day and answer e-mails.

We should however i think find some activity a lot of us enjoy and see if we can arrange something for the summer. Even if its just throwing a football around or something....

while i am a guy that plays with balls, i also love XC.

i was actually wondering where you were at last night 01LUGrad. i always notice your little guy running that shows up on your posts.

after shukcb04 bad-mouthed XC, i thought for sure you would have said something.

We should've made a FF softball team.

I'm up for doing something though.

That wouldn't be a terrible idea for a promotion to kick off the season and the idea of tail gating... esp if Barber got some marketing behind it.... A new tradition? There could even be a winner at each game who competes against other winners at the final home game at halftime. I know it was tossed out as a joke but it could have legs.

I remember years ago when SI had an article on PE classes and the pro/con of them. I will never forget the one line a PE teacher said in the article. What good does it do you if had the most education, master, PhD degrees and you are died at 30 because you didn't take care of yourself thru exercise, sport.

I've been doing much better in what I eat (except tomorrow- I enter a new decade and my friends are getting together then family's coming down later...My friend asked what kind of cake I can eat-I said I'd just have a small piece). I've been snacking on unroasted nuts, sunflower seeds, raisins.
Making room in the schedule for exercise is a difficult task, but I really need to do it (esp. w/ operation looming). The DR.'s wife that did my cleanse knows of a women's soccer group for the summer.(?)
SJ-how abt. if someone gives you a Step2000 and "Buns of Steel" video (a boyfriend described as havin' a "kickin' bod gave it to me AND tried to push me into a weight-lifting routine :x BTW, I have sculiosis- curvature of spine- so that is a factor; it was found in 8th gr. I was told no contact sports like football

I dropped $25 & joined LaHaye this morning! For faculty & staff, it's only $25 a month (or $100 per semester or $200 per per year). I have a couple of heavy-duty weight lifting faculty friends who joined, too. I shot basketball for 90 minutes and lifted with them for like half an hour. There's almost nobody there from 8:00-10:00 in the morning. I hadn't shot that much basketball since Scar and I were on the same church league team in the '90s.
