I think the town is more annoyed with the tackiness of it. Most people are aware that universities and other organizations monogram landscapes, but these other organizations tend to do it better and more tastefully. LU seems to like their presentations big and tacky. As an artist of sorts who has studied graphic design, I find the monogram offensive to the eye, although I'm not up in arms about it like some of the locals.

In winter, the monogram looks tacky...however I think once is finished and there is green on the trees it'll look a lot nicer, and come fall with all the colors...WOW.

Examples, please. The other university monograms I've seen don't look that great.

Unfortuately I don't keep a gallery of monograms on my hard drive, and there doesn't seem to be a plethora of examples through Google images either. The ones I've seen tastefully done didn't take up a significant portion of the side of a mountain. They were located on small grassy areas, usually near the entrance to the company/residence/school/organization. They didn't stick out or draw too much attention, but added a nice subtle touch to the overall landscape. Generally these are done with some shrubbery... not too high, but not too short, nice, but not too fancy...

I agree that the BYU monogram is hideous, but it doesn't make the LU monogram any better.

I don't call this understated (in case you missed it on the last page)

I don't understand how everybody could hate it because it looks tacky. I won't even get into how anything could be considered tacky because it's an OPINION. But seriously, it's 2 letters surrounded by white. It's almost identical to our Varsity logo. Do you think that's tacky? Or is it only tacky when it's on a mountain? And it that's the case, you wouldn't like any landscaping on the mountain.

Also, as for changing what the letters say. I think anybody with that idea hasn't been up there to see it up close. I think it would take 50 people all night with a truck full of spray paint. Each rock is a little bit larger than a person's head. Plus there is already vegitation planted in the middle of the letters. Good luck.

Winston-Salem State has a nice one right off of the exit to get to the school.

Terps "M" changes w/season

It is a nice visual as you enter campus but certainly does not have the impact of a logo on a mountain..... or a large hill like Candlers :P

also, just to prove how retarded these folk are, I'll point out I have never read a letter to the editor complaining about others' logos. Does anybody recognize this?

Perhaps you don't. But that's because the only place you may have seen it is on 501 before the Graves Mill Road exit and it may have looked a little different because IT'S MADE OUT OF STONE AND SHRUBS. This company has done the exact same thing on their own property. They just weren't fortunate to have the same visible peice of real estate.

I wouldn't say it's only tacky when it's on a mountain; I'm sure I could think of other settings where it would be tacky. It's not that the logo itself is tacky. It's just that something can be presented in a tacky way—for instance, blowing it up to mammoth proportions and slapping it on the side of a mountain without any thought as to how it will look alongside the surrounding vegetation.

That's more the kind of monogramming I was talking about earlier. It looks a lot better than the LU monogram.

That seems to be the biggest argument in support of the monogram (that and at least it doesn't look like BYU's), and I hope you're right. I just don't see how it will look good in the middle of all those trees.

And here I thought I was the only graphics person here, on a board inhabited by students and alumni of a school where graphic design is a popular major.

You should have taken the picture from say, oh, US-221 so folks could see how much it stands out in the skyline. Put lights around it and you have the 'burg's version of the Roanoke star.

See, I didn't feel like resizing them.

As for taking em from 221, I didn't feel like driving all of the way over there. Want me to take one on 60 going to Lexington too?
