No, as of right now the only way this bird flys is if the city has total control, and as of right now LU has agreed to that meaning KISS can come if they want and Keg stands can be done by the fans in the crowd.

I just dont like this idea. and like i mentioned before, "kinks" like certain concerts and alcohol will not be controlled by LU, nor do they want it to be.

I think we're losing the distinction here between a civic center built on Liberty's campus or built on land that Liberty currently owns. Right now, LU owns a ton of land on the 460 W side that is not a part of the LU campus. Also, add in the fact that, once LU donated the land to the city to build on, it would by definition no longer be LU property.

I would not have a problem with that...BUT, as it stands it would remain LU's property and use of the facility would be a "lease"

See, I read the article the other way; LU would donate the land to the city/county (making it their property) and the city/county would build the center and LU would have a favorable lease agreement from them w/ no standing ownership on our part whatsoever.

To be honest I didnt even read the article, I just get the run down from some involved...I cant sit still long enough to read all that...ADD is a killer

I think what LU would be doing is very similar to what pro teams do, they lease out the building a set number of days a year, once they get the schedule down or what not they let the arena know then the arena books other activities...it seems to work all right...I think this could work...but who knows about long term...those kind of issues would have to be talked out

not that I care, but it would be stupid for the town to build one. If there was a market for one, it would have been there a while ago, built by a private owner. But hey, if they want to foot the bill, that's good for LU.

I think if this is built, we should remodel the Vines, fix everything, and make it a great basketball arena. It has the potential. We don't need anything bigger for basketball games. Use the other thing for convo, etc.

agreed LUconn and SJ..lynchburg does not have the market for a civic center, and as i said before, JPJ is pulling big events from richmond, so is is realistic that we get good events??? and SJ is so on the money. we do not need a absketball arena bigger than what we have now. a bigger place would be for convo, and that winterfest thing.

Vision people vision... All info we have says this thing is 5 years out at the earliest. Liberty is 3 years ahead of schedule on growth and all signs are that the growth is not slowing down. There are many reasons that this new arena would be a big benefit... if the University does get to 25,000 students locally than I think we'd have no problem selling out a 9,000 seat Vines... It will make sense to move. In addition you will have luxury boxes which will draw added revenue for home games as well as the recruiting that can be done with a booming arena.

As for events I think the city would be able to get enough to fill a schedule. For all the poking fun at the red-neck games, they would actually sell in Middle-Virginia. I could see monster trucks making a splash. This talk isn't here b/c of Lynchburg/Liberty of today... it's being floated b/c of what will be the Lynchburg/Liberty of the future. It's not all that far fetched.

We will never average more than 9600 people at games on a regular basis. The Vines is perfect for basketball. I'd much rather have a packed out 9600 seat stadium every night than a half empty 20,000 seat stadium.

I agree with SJ...keep the Vines around for basketball only and smaller events as well...unless we move into some big time conference later on there is no reason for us not to play basketball in the Vines for years to come

I bet you they would average that many fans in the first year it was opened, especially if we are sniffing even 20,000 students in the next 5-10 years. A new stadium at a school of 20,000+ students will pull 10,000 fans easily in its first year or two IMO. If they actually had a good team, they may sniff 12,000+ fans. I personally like the idea of having the city build it. You would have a much better selection of both Christian and secular music groups come through and everything will not have to go through Liberty (they like to make a mess of things at times). It would be one less thing that we have to take care of and would basically be owned by us with the amount of use it would get.

And now for a completely insane idea...

If a 20,000-seat stadium/arena is built, make it big enough to house indoor football. No more standing outside in monsoons or freezing cold weather.

Medic-feel free to issue me a certificate of insanity anytime.

most FCS teams with indoor places seem to not really like it from what I've read.

And Lynchburg could get its own Arena3 team!! Woohoo! :!: :!:

football is meant to be played outdoors, and actually- on grass.

I'm just now getting comfortable with field turf- don't push it.

See: the vaunted Green Bay Packers or Chicago Bears (spoken in true Howard Cosell fashion)

We just got an A2 team on our side of town. I'm still trying to figure out how these teams exist with no one watching them.

If the Roanoke experiment is any indication, they don't.

If LU ever decides to go with an off campus arena, here's an option for an aesthetic enhancement to the campus where the "ravine" is now:

(Taken from the eBay listing for OK Wesleyan University...not a bad looking campus.)

LU students can't handle a fountain- I shudder to think of the disasters lurking in a big pond. Why am I envisioning LUPD cruisers being rolled off the edge, thousands of boxes of laundry soap being dumped, etc...

not to mention the occasional drowning.

call me a pessamist.

Other colleges seem to be able to function quite nicely with bodies of water on their campuses (JMU, CCU, Richmond, OWU, etc.) and they are drawing from the same age group. Guess it's time for the youth group demo to grow up a bit
