Yeah, I reached out to Liberty and was basically told that it was my mistake to assume the scholarship would continue and I should be grateful for the scholarships that have been given out to past students.

It's times like this that I am thankful that Liberty is comprised of more than one person and isn't defined by one decision. We will still try to send our kids there but man, it's going to be a heck of a lot harder.
It is unfortunate that you had to experience the 'other' Liberty Way

Unfortunate, but not surprising. As Medic said, this would be a great time for the Chancellor to weigh in on this.

Unfortunately responses like that seem to be more standard operating procedure lately.

Yes, I would also. I'm an LCA grad. The LCA scholarships started after I graduated so I did not benefit from them. I paid for my degree with earned scholarships, student loans and part-time jobs. The program may have to go away, but those that made decisions to put their students in these schools prior to the decision should be grandfathered.

Mr. Chancellor, you can fix this. You're an LCA alum yourself. You know what it meant to those families when it was offered. If there was not an intention to continue the program through graduation for those that enrolled, it should not have been allowed to be used as a recruiting tool. Please do the right thing and honor it for those that are currently enrolled.

But you still have to meet the minimum SAT/ACT scores and apply early. When that scholarship was created, the required scores were 1270 or 29, but I think they are going up slightly next year.

Sounds like a similar excuse to the internet company that just scammed this week.

For those of you invoking the running joke of my sendng a PM to him about this, I will see what I can do but he does not get automatic updates of posts and PMs to his email like he used to, so it may take a little longer.

Time to change the name back to Lynchburg Christian Acadamy?
This doesn't make any sense to me. So LU is basically cutting ties with LCA. Seems like the school has been gradually eliminating these types of scholarships in recent years (children of pastors/missionaries also used to get financial help). Does that mean the Timberlake CS discount will be eliminated as well?

My kids go to another Christian school in Lynchburg, and they lose students almost yearly to LCA for two reasons: athletics and the LU scholarship.

Yes, they're cutting them for all area Christian schools. It saddens me that LU is taking this route.

Well and the irony is that Liberty is trying to sell the idea that we can now stack our LCA scholarship with other Liberty scholarships if our children graduate from LCA. It's hard for us to trust Liberty when they say, "But you can now take advantage of other scholarships."

In 7 and 13 years when my kids start college, what makes me think those "other" scholarships will be available.

From what I understand, Liberty is concerned with tuition paying students subsidizing LCA and other Christian school students. They feel that many of the families who send their kids to LCA are wealthy enough to pay for college as well or needy enough to qualify for a needs based scholarship.

This leaves out the middle class that works hard but can really only afford one or the other, not both.

I'm not saying I agree with there move here but couldn't you use the money you spend sending your kids to Christian school every year and put it into a college fund instead?

Or are you totally anti public school?

We had a terrible experience in public school with our daughter.

The decision we have to make is to put that money toward LCA tuition or, if we put our kids in public school, put that money toward college savings.

I know it's a first world problem but the expectations that were set when we enrolled at LCA is very different than the reality we now face.

Oh I understand completely. I don't want you to think I am trying to downplay how badly the situation is for you and your family.

I had a terrible experience the one year I went to Christian school in middle school so I kind of have a thing against it. So bad stuff can happen in any school but I am sure you know that. My daughter will be starting school next fall and I do not look forward to those complexities expecially here in dc.

Not sure which public schools your kids would got to but there are some pretty good options locally. Ours went through Brookville schools and did very well there. They were not the popular kids by any stretch but never had problems making friends. And there are actually a lot of good Christian teachers in those schools.

That's what we've heard so that is reassuring. You have to remember we came from California so it's a very different atmosphere. We're praying about what myself and other families will do.

I know several other families that made huge sacrifices to relocate to Lynchburg due to this as well.

Thankfully, none of us have to make a decision tomorrow.

SuperJon wrote:Jerry Jr did a great job explaining the switch in that radio interview. I hate how a YR was spoken to, but once you take the emotional attachment away from this decision, it makes sense. It doesn't look great but it makes sense.
I understand the reasons, but the message conflicts with itself. On one hand Liberty is saying, "We never promised this because we always had the disclaimer that we can cancel this at any time." The new program, including all of the scholarship credit that has been accrued and the ability to stack it with other scholarships includes the same disclaimer that they can cancel or terminate it at any time.

So 7 or 13 years down the line when my kids are ready to go to college, I suppose it's very possible I'll be told, "This isn't available anymore...remember that disclaimer?"
