I actually will be working from home so commute for me to work will not be an issue. My wife will likely be finding a job somewhere in the city while she "regrows" her photography business that she currently has out here in California and we are trying to send the kids to the Liberty Christian Academy.

Likely when we first move we will move into a nice apartment and then look for a home since we have never been out to Lynchburg before.

Anyone know of apartment homes they would be willing to recommend that would make a family with two younglings feel safe? Although from California, we currently live in a quiet rural peaceful area.

Thanks again! We look forward to heading out there! :D
Everything everyone else has to say is pretty accurate of you are looking to buy. Since you are looking for a rental, I would suggest focusing on the western and southern edges of the city limits (both inside the city and in Bedford and Campbell counties. There are tons of newer townhouses, apartments, and condos in those areas, and I would classify most of them as "safe" for families with small kids. Wyndhurst and Cornerstone are newer mixed use developments, if you are into that kind of setting. If you prefer a little more rural, but still extremely convenient to all of the Ward's Rd. shopping and LCA, then I would suggest looking at some of the townhouses and condos on English Tavern Road, just south of Lynchburg in Campbell County. Newer 2-3 bedroom townhouses will likely start at around $900 - $1000 per month. When you get closer to the move or getting serious about finding a place, let us know and we can be on the lookout for something available.

if you're doing some rural living, believe it or not some places still do not have high speed internet which you obviously need for your telecommuting. Mainly places built within the last couple years that aren't on a main cable line. Verizon tells every new house that they're basically "full" so DSL isn't an option unless the house already had it. And Shentel won't string cable to a new house unless it's fairly close to existing lines or the development is big enough that their contract with the county says they have to.

Aren't you basically telling him exactly what he said (minus the paranthetical personal details, of course)?

Yep, lots of construction going on out that way, and it is really convenient. I also think Shentel is in all of the developments on the northern part of English Tavern, so there are no high speed internet worries like LUconn mentions (and yes, I was in one of those no broadband, Verizon says DSL is full, situations before).

There is next to nothing in Appomattox, even the Walmart is trash compared to the two in Lynchburg or even the one in Farmville, and the one in Farmville sucks. Of course, if your family has a thing for really expensive, high class furniture, living in Appomattox and being about 30ish minutes from Farmville isn't too bad given the proliferations of stores with furniture I could only dream of being able to afford...
How fast do you drive? 30? Wards Rd to Appomattox is ~20 minutes. Even still it's a great drive. Try getting from JF area to Wards Rd, it's about the same time and with more traffic.
You are right about the Wal Mart. It does great on the basics and the pharmacy is awesome but not as much selection as Wards Rd.
From my Lynchburg home, which is nearly on the outskirts of Forest as it's a couple miles inside the city limits, it takes 30 minutes to get from there to Appomattox driving the speed limit. Made the drive tons of times, always clocks out at around 30 minutes when I get to the stop light.

Thanks for the tips on high speed internet. It definitely is a must have as a telecommuter.

I appreciate all the feedback that you guys have given. Check out my earlier post for thoughts on some of the townhomes/apartments.

Thanks!

That makes sense. I was timing from the 29 exit to the stop light. It's a great drive. I think it's a might far if you have to work out yonder". But if you have to commute to the Mountain it's perfect. You have an easy exit too LU/LCA without the Candlers Mountain RD mess

Hey Rock - I live out in Forest and it's a beautiful area with plenty of living amenities. I think many of the locations above are great, but I would say the best option would be another Gables property - The Gables of Jefferson Commons. It's right off of Route 221 and has many children that live there. It's more of a community for families than the ones you have listed. It's a newly built construction by Maddox Construction (Great Builder) and has a splash park going in, a basketball court, clubhouse, fitness center, full theater and playground. It's 2 mile away from the nicest Grocery in Lynchburg and if very safe. Also has plenty of mountain views for those long days in the office. PM me - I would love to talk to your wife about Photography and some opportunities with Prototype and our publications - Always looking for good resources. Good luck with your search and let me know if you need any other help. You will love it here!!!

Come on - that's Boonsboro - anyone that refers to where they live as a zip code pretty much take the bag. Forest really isn't that snooty - pretty good mix of people out here. You should venture out of your hunting cabin down there in Campbell sometime and check it out;)

Just move to Rivermont- all sizes and types of houses. You got that great 24503 zip, but you aren't in Boonsboro, so Proto can't call you snooty!

Rivermont's not Boonsboro? Unless your in the hood closer to downtown and you are required to wear a vest there at all times;)

Almost everyone has told us that Rivermont is not a great area to live. Are they wrong?

Nope. I mean there are some gorgeous houses, great fix-r-uppers on one end and a thriving crack zone on the other. Plus if you want to do any type of improvement to your home they have to meet the standards of the historical society. Good luck with that!

Yeah, I saw some listings online of homes that looked great. We love the old look but are into more modern floorplans so will likely look for something else when we buy eventually.

Willowrook sounds familiar, I can't place where it is since I don't know those road names. The Vistas at Dreaming Creek, last time I was in the know, was filled with youngsters and college students. Plus it's in the city. And about 2 minutes where I grew up. Do you really want to live that close to my old stomping grounds :D

I can't believe that you guys are so against living in the city! Shoot, all the best shopping (WalMart, Ross, TJMaxx) and best dining (Applebee's Ruby Tuesdays, Golden Corral) are in the city; do you really want to spend 20 minutes in your SUV's to get those kind of choices when you can just find a place to live close by?

None are bad. The Vistas and Legacy are, by far, the most convenient of those apartment offerings. Wyndhurst and The Gables would be next in line in regards to convenience. All are new(er).

It costs considerably less to live outside the city, and there is less crime.
