Liberty University is moving forward with its idea of putting an “LU” monogram on the side of Candlers Mountain.
On Friday, workmen put the finishing touch on a plastic-sheet version of the 200-foot letters that run adjacent to LU’s North Campus.
Motorists traveling along Candlers Mountain Road in Lynchburg can easily see the white letters.
LU Vice Chancellor Jerry Falwell Jr. announced his plans for the monogram last month.
He said the plastic sheet letters would help officials determine exactly where the letters should be placed on the mountainside.
“The finished product will look 100 percent better than what you see up there this weekend,” Falwell Jr. said.
He said the plastic sheet letters were installed as a way to celebrate LU’s homecoming weekend.
“They will help us perfect the size of the letters,” he said.
The final version of the monogram will be made out of decorative landscape stone.
“When we’re through, it will look like a small park,” he said.
“There will be landscape beds in the shape of letters.”
Ultimate, LU plans to plant grass on the three-acre site surrounding the letters.
Just how the letters will play with City Hall remains to be seen.
City Manager Kimball Payne said Friday the letters were supposed to be temporary and permanent letters in a similar style would require a permit from City Council.
Falwell Jr. said the school would be in compliance with city regulations as articulated by city zoning officials.
An e-mail from city zoning official Rob Fowler on Sept. 20 outlined precisely what LU can do.
“I am taking the position that if the existing vegetation or other natural materials were to be used for the monogram that it would fall outside sign ordinance requirements,” Fowler wrote.
