Assuming Liberty actually builds it, do you have any idea what the alcohol policy would be for the Civic Center? I'd imagine that Liberty would try to put some stipulations banning alcohol sales even if it were turned over to the city. It would be a tough sell to get people to come out to big concerts if alcohol is banned.

if i remember correctly LU would pay half the construction cost with Lynchburg paying the other half but Lynchburg would own it with LU renting it out. As for Alcohol sales I would imagine Lynchburg would want it at secular events, another $ maker. Obviously Liberty games wouldn't have any.

Oh, no doubt the college games wouldn't have alcohol. I was just wondering if Liberty would stipulate that it be banned completely.

I don't understand the whole "LU is buying up all of Lynchburg" argument, go to any small/medium sized city that has a large university and you'll see the same thing. Come to Chapel Hill or Durham, UNC and Duke own everything, it's the way it is. I would think citizens of Lynchburg would be more grateful of the economic impact that a school the size of LU generates. Can any of you imagine Lynchburg without LU? Yeesh..get over it.

My understanding was also the 1/2 and 1/2 building costs, with Liberty turning over "ownership" to the city. The city would then hire EMPLOYEES, and get the revenue, while Liberty would get a set schedule of events and opportunities. Lynchburg would have alcohol at their events like the RCC and SCC for sure. The funny thing is the commenters would then have to eat crow as LU would be helping the area with jobs, taxes, and $$.

Keep in mind it's 11 AM. All the welfare queens and unemployment 99'ers just woke up. The rest of us who love Liberty are hard at work, doing our jobs. Bless they heart, the lazy layabouts have nothing else to do but make asinine statements on facebook.

This kinda sucks though. I have a good amount of craftsman hand tools and I could just walk in there and exchange them if they ever broke. Also, most of Lynchurg's appliances come from there. I thought they were expanding their auto center. I know they were just hiring a bunch for it. A strange event indeed.
Most malls are subdivided into a number of parcels. The major stores such as Sears often wanted to own their sites but agreed to be part of the mall and operated under a joint agreement that governs how that works as to sharing expenses, hours, etc. Sears probably agreed to be there XX years and that time has expired so they can close or sell to whomever. I am surprised the mall ownership would not step-up and buy that site so they can control all of the mall and what goes there. It would be better for them if another large retailer would go into that space but I guess the owners had other plans.

Here's one article about their national store closings plan.

I'm loading up when they put stuff on clearance/liquidation! Too bad I just got a new TV!

Sears biggest downfall was when they bought K-Mart

Eventually LU will own the entire mall complex, buy the space above the railroad tracks and put up the civic center. You heard it here first! Study

Sears always had the best clearance deals on TVs, that's where we got our plasma. When someone returns something there, they cut the price drastically even when there's nothing wrong. Best Buy...might knock off $30.

It's too bad they're closing.

My favorite post from the N&A website:
N&A Reader wrote: "If the civic center becomes reality, Liberty will be the anchor tenant, but not the owner, so events could occur that would be prohibitied by Liberty's codes, Falwell said."

This is the reason Lynchburg does not like Liberty. If they buy a piece of real estate, they slap the Liberty University name of it, or have provisions. In this case, a civic center would be excellent choice BUT if it is built certain shows or concerts will be prohibited probably due to cussing or "adult content". So LU is gunna help to build a civic center but the city must adhere to THEIR codes. Majority of people in the city don't like LU bc they want to tell Lynchburg what is acceptable in THEIR eyes. That is why the relationship sucks. Liberty has CREATED A LOT that the city has benefited from and Lynchburg appreciates it. VCU is building in Richmond at an unprecedented rate and the Siegel Center on campus caters to ALL.
I love how he posts a quote from the Chancellor which explicitly states that the University will not control the choice of events, and then he proceeds to rip the University for controlling the content of events.

Um, no that's not what happened. I believe its clear at this point its a nationwide downsizing although reading the org title and article on WSET you would swear we ran them out of town and were the reason 84 people lost their job. Then they changed the way it read and all is well...but then the comments from both sides no longer make as much sense....but dont let those details get in the way of some good social rants!

Nondisclosures are nothing to play with...and when the Chancellor is rather familiar with the law its extra important. I wasnt privy to this information prior to today so dont blame me :D

Also, all of this originated from a youtube video. It made JLFjr react and run out and buy a Sears!

Hold My Own wrote:Because the process of closing down 150 Sears stores takes a lot of time Purple!!!
The Lynchburg store was not on the list of closing (it was published); the list was comprised of stores that were performing poorly. Sears is doing the same thing that IHOP/Applebees did a few years ago- divesting themselves of property in an effort to raise 700 million. This was a separate move that Sears Holdings began early this year and it seems that each store could be a case by case situation. One thing that is interesting is that Sears Commercial sales office in Lynchburg is one of the busiest and covers an area much larger than the Lynchburg region. including Roanoke and Charlottesville. They sell more appliances than any other retailer in Lynchburg, so I wonder what the future will be with Sears in the area.
