That sounds crazy. In drivers ed we were taught that it is illegal to ever pass or cross over a double yellow line. This was confirmed when my mom was rear ended when trying to make such a turn. The officer told her that she was lucky that she had not made the turn, or she would have been cited.

Where passing is permitted, the line closest is a "dashed" line. If passing is always allowed, then a dashed line is used.

Either way, it goes against the laws of nature that such a ridiculous turn would be legal, let alone recommended by an officer (I am referring to the specific turn I referenced in the earlier post).

I guess I was wrong about the double yellow lines...

From the WA state DOL: "Two solid yellow lines between lanes of traffic means neither side can pass. You may cross yellow lane markings, except medians, to turn left if it is safe."

Of course, I guess the officer would have cited my mom because it was not "safe." Personally, I think stopping in the middle of a road with two lanes of traffic both ways is never "safe."
