That is the reason I asked about the high paying jobs there. I have not lived there for more then 30 yrs and back then there were no high paying jobs. So anyone that lives in Lynchburg, let us know of any.

A ministry that happens to be booming at the moment...but still a ministry.

IMO they need to transition the thinking on that...TRBC is a ministry, but LU has reached the crossroads that it needs to be seen and run as the professional institution it is and should be.

So outside TRBC or LU there are no high pay jobs, companies in the Lynchburg area?

B&W used to pay well back in the day. And bankers & personal injury lawyers still seem to do all right. And Fleet used to turn a nice profit making their unmentionables. :D

Booming, yes, but still not paying "competitive" wages. But that is the excuse they give you, "We CAN'T pay as much, we are a MINISTRY, besides your 401k will be in Heaven, and wouldn't you rather have it there? " (Ok I made that last phrase up, but...)

There's lots of high paying jobs in Lynchburg. Well not a lot in relation to the population but they're there. All you have to do is drive through boonesboro or Forest. There are plenty of people to support those hoi paloi stores. It'd probably be smarter to build them closer to them but LU doesnt have land for sale closer to them.

There is no question as to whether the burg has good jobs. My brother-in-law was interseted in an engineering position @ Framatome- pay was equal to that at his mid-level engineering position in Raleigh. Between Framatome and BWXT, you have over 4200 good jobs, and over half of these would be considered higher paying. There are probably more engineers in Lynchburg than in most cities of its size. You also have a bunch of highly paid medical professionals @ Centra Health.
Area companies with high paying jobs: Framatome, BWXT, Ma/Com, Fleet, Centra, GenWorth, Liberty (more than 20!), Abbott Labs, Bel-Vac, FlowServe, Barr Labs, Andrew Corp - of course there are plenty of wireless/ higher-tech spin-offs from old Ericcson companies, plenty of lawyers, doctors, small businesses. I'd say that things are pretty good here.

Sounds like the Chamber of Commerse now has a poster on Flamefans.com :D

Honestly... good insight. I forgot about framatone and there are also some decent architects around the area.

I don't know if I'd include Genworth in there. Sure, the higher up positions pay pretty good, but the rest of us are like slave labor. I'm pretty sure the corporate office considers Lynchburg to be the India of Virginia. Move the jobs there because you don't have to pay them as much.

Lynchburg definitely has a higher income group but I would say that in Boonsboro there is a lot of "old money" there as well. I would agree that the companies listed by Roger from the Chamber of Commerce  are paying people pretty well. But I would say that a great majority of them are paying engineers most of that money. There are not many IT (Information Technology) positions at most of these companies with the exception of Genworth. In my experience I have had to go to DC or Richmond to make good money even though I have been in Project Management for over 15 years. I am in play with Genworth but their screening process would rival getting an executive job at a fortune 500 company! Lots of layers in their screening process. For a IT professional like me, Genworth is one of the few options that I have come across. Those other companies are not looking for a lot of Project Managers it seems from the lack of job postings. Still Lynchburg is a very attractive place to live for many.

I understand that Luconn and you are correct. I was trying to emphasize the Executive Part. It may take 3 months for them to come to a conclusion on a candidate and by then a person is either no longer in play or they take the job. Maybe you and I will be co-workers soon (ok soon is a relative term. In the future  ).

I don't know. I'm getting bored and I'd like to have more money. I'm not sure if there's anything here for me.

You should try teaching. I am raking it in. No, really...I have to rake people's yards on the side to pay the bills.

That made me laugh. I always thought about one of those cake teaching jobs like elementary school gym teacher. Man, you get to play games all day and you get the whole summer off. I think I'm an idiot for not getting this job right now. Your biggest task all year is planning field day.

Ahh, I remember well the moment I chose the Social Studies route instead of the PE route. Every once in a while I think about trying to get in contact with my former self and changing my mind (kinda like Biff in Back to the Future 2). Before I try to reproduce the flux capacitor (sp?) I come to my senses and realize that I made a good decision....even if I have to do yard work on the side.

while our chamber friend is correct that those companies have high paying positions, many of them are engineers, and they stay here for quite some time. LUconn is right as well other than executive mgmt at genworth most are not paid that great. im sure there is some proof that lynchburg can support that kind of growth, but i remain highly skeptical. most high paying jobs in the burg are executive level and engineers....that group of people will not be able to sustain supporting the short pump concept IMHO.

You still can get on that wave...remember PE teachers make the same pay scale as the calculus teacher...Florida State University Distance Education offers a Masters of Physical Education...and if you've already done student teaching in another area, you can still get in.

Do you realize how hard a PE degree is though? Those guys deserve getting paid what they do.
