As if nobody has ever canceled before. Wednesday is the big one. I'll speak if they need someone.

As for the cancellation...dont we have quite a few people that are considered pastors on staff and even more professors that are probably over qualified to speak or preach?

Really? There's no way....
Way. I will remain silent on my thoughts towards that.
The only thing I'll say is that there's been more canceling convo in the past two years than I'd seen in the previous five before combined.

I admit I am shocked to ever see Convo cancelled. There has to be more to the story than a speaker not being able to come.

I don't remember convo ever being cancelled during my time on campus from '99-'02. Is this becoming a somewhat normal occurrence?

convo should only be once a week anyways. I have always thought that and always will

No way, man. Though some years the convo speakers isnt all it could be, like election years, its a great opportunity that is dreaded my so many. What other school brings in the caliber of speakers that we can learn from, etc. etc. than Liberty? Granted, some speakers arent that good, but more often than not, they are professionals in fields the students are going to. I mean, where else has anything like that 3 times a week?

who else has anything like that one time a week? I don't see a real problem with making it one day a week. If they ever do decide to do that though it will be met with a lot of resistance because people will think they are heading away from the "original vision". Which is complete crap, but that is what some will say.

Every Liberty student should have to suffer through an election year. 3 Convos per week. 3 political messages. 3 hours of torture.

Convo does get canceled more often now. I remember 4 or 5 years ago when the campus lost power - all classes were canceled but you still went to convo. That is no longer the case.

Heck even when they bring in convo speakers that are political just think of it as an opportunity to hear from some of our nations leaders (even if you don’t agree with them). During the last presidential cycle they had McCain, Huckabee, Ron Paul, and even some no name candidate (I literally can’t remember his name) at different events on campus (all convo speakers other than McCain who did graduation). What other school had this many candidates on campus? Other than a school or two who hosted a debate I would guess not many.

Also while they do tend to have mainly preachers and the like do convo…isn’t that what preachers do? I would like to see them get speakers from other fields but I think this is still a fairly hard sell to many individuals (the potential speakers with some of LU’s controversy and such). They did have Samuel Truett Cathy founder of Chick-fil-a (not the best speaker he’s like 1000 but still).

I understand what you’re saying but convo is something that makes LU very unique and I would be slow to go about changing it too much. While it might be necessary in the future to change the format I can’t jump on with the idea to get ride of 2/3 of the current convos.

I think we are still losing sight of the idea of convo and keep focusing on the "names" that are preaching. We have many on campus capable of grasping the attention of the students. Heck we have a slew of Seminary professors alone that are teaching our students how to go out and preach the gospel....wouldnt they be a likely candidate?

I think it'd be better to go to two days a week and change it to Tuesday/Thursday. It's the best combo of trimming the fat but not going away from the original mission. I also think by doing that, you'd have a lot more kids going to church on Wednesday night. Right now a lot don't go because they had church that morning and don't see the need for twice in one day.

There are about 15 people in the seminary who could speak with a 2 day notice. I wish I could go back now and pay attention to the majority of the speakers...they usually had good stuff and of course, I loathed convo as a student.

You'd catch a lot of kids who go home on Friday's, too. I used to go home just to skip convo.

I thought the idea of changing from Chapel to Convo was to open it up to more than just preaching. Has that not been the case?

Isn't that the idea to bring in big names that we wouldn't normally get the chance to hear? I looked at it as an opportunity to here from leaders you normally would never hear from. From my experience and opinion convo is not and should not try to be church for LU students.

My last year, I'd sign out every Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday to get out of it. Boy was that wonderful.

This smacks of something I've heard recently, but I can't seem to put my finger on it. Hmm...

I was never a seminary student so I have not heard many of them preach or teach and would be very interested in hearing them.

TD...I'm the same way. I REALLY enjoy convo now as an employee but really didnt as a student. I suppose its the maturing process
