Lynchburg is growing just as fast as Roanoke in terms of total numbers, which would mean faster in percentage terms. That will help attract people to the venue. Not to mention the fact that people will travel to Lynchburg for big enough things just like people will travel from Lynchburg to Roanoke/Salem or Charlottesville...

what a waste of money this would be. like the others have said between the roanoke civic center and JPJ a lynchburg center would not get quality shows. JPJ is managed by SMG and they partner with richmond on a lot of shows and roanoke is managed by global spectrum owned by comcast and has renovated the facility andthe quality of shows they have been getting has improved as well. what about alcohol sales? would LU support something that would allow that? concerts, sporting events, wrestling, monster trucks and all of that stuff sell alcohol. i would rather see a mall on that property, but the idea really does not make sense to me.

A mall? Let's see an existing one survive before we build another one.

Alcohol sales would be simple: Don't sell alcohol at LU events. It's not like Liberty is paying for it to be built. Theyve offered to pay for just the feasibility study.

One issue could be related to alcohol products on signage. It would be worked through, but I'll bet the negotiating process will include some discussion of how to handle that.

the mall thing could work if the plan the thought of a "town center" is carried out and the economic impact would be much greater than a civic center. this is years off anyway and hopefully the economy will have turned back by then.

the roanoke cc is still a dump, how they get any shows to agree to come in there is beyond me..i went there for a wwe event a couple years ago and had never been so uncomfortable at a arena in my life...the vines is more comfortable then that dump

Yes, but look at the time period. College students are counted in that, and between 2000-2006 LU grew from 5,000 to 11,000 students. It also doesn't surprise me that people are leaving the cities of Roanoke and Salem for Roanoke County or Vinton in Bedford county...taxes in the city limits are outrageous and we don't get free parking in downtown Roanoke

Its a private school, therefore LU has the right to censor whatever they want no matter how right or wrong we feel they may be.

I highly, highly doubt that it was on purpose. The way these filters work is one word can get something blocked. Deviantart was blocked for the longest time and there's no reason that should be blocked. Just click on the link to put in a review for it instead of complaining on another website.

Isn't the specifics of what gets filtered done by a 3rd party? I mean I know some things are added to be blocked by request but I think they let somebody else do 90% of it. Certainly nothing to go crazy screaming censorship over. Especially since you can get the same content through Lexus Nexus I bet.

Junior was on the radio talking about civic center stuff this morning. I had to run in to work so I missed it. Anyone able to catch any of it?

If they get this thing going with LU as a major tenant I think it would have to run in the overall public interest which means there migth be some shows, etc that LU might not approve of or support. That could get ricky. What if some pro-abortion group wanted to have a convention there? Could get messy real fast. Tough to meld public and private together without problems. Would LU be OK with some shows that the students might be banned from attending?

Recognizing that without the revenue of the primary tenant, it would be tough to keep such a venture afloat would appear to be some insurance against the city bringing in events that are an affront to LU. Yeah, concerts & conventions outside the Liberty Way would have to be permitted. But let's be honest, if this thing is going to work as a new convo hall then it has to be right next to campus. So you would assume those who are strongly contrary to Liberty are probably not going to want to come hang around our crowd anyway.

the thing i dont get is if it is supposed to be a new convo hall then why aren't we planning on it seating 15-20,000? if the plan to eventually expand the school to 25K why would we agree to be the major tenant of something that we would outgrow so quickly?

What pro-abortion groups go around having conventions?

Ok, let's rephrase: what if a pro-choice politician wanted to have a rally there?

I'm trying to understand here. Are you guys worried about LU "renting" a facility that may have things that go against the Liberty Way? If LU was to own the building and lease it out to these functions, that would be a problem. LU dinners are sometimes held at restaurants, restaurants that serve alcohol...obviously they do not partake in the consumption but it is in the same venue.

Concept still applies, if you're willing to rent from any establishment that may offer things that go against your standards then it doesnt matter if it's a restaurant or civic center.

I guess when you say millions your talking about a 5 to 10 year period.
