Killed several under a large rock in a mulch bed, several babies that were inside of a towel on my patio and some in a tarp sitting in the grass. I looked at hiring one of the companies to spray monthly but they normally spray around the base of the house.
Get the lawn insect killer at Lowe's (granules) & spread it around. Works very well for keeping them out of your yard.
Thanks I will try. Is it safe with kids playing in the yard?

I spread Ortho Bug B Gone in my back yard and it was a bit of a bug massacre. I don't think they lasted 24 hours. However I did find a widow post spreading. The pesticide didn't specifically state that it would kill them, but I figured with no food they'd just leave. I still think that will happen but I read that they sometimes stay in the same spot and can go up to a month without a meal. Since it's supposed to keep bugs dead all season I figure in a couple of weeks it should be spider free. I have kids and they play back there, and they're not deformed yet. My well water also comes from back there which I was a bit nervous about but I'm still alive.

when I moved into my apartment in wynstone last semester, we had a brown recluse in it for a while. Now that I live in my house, im thinking of all the piles of dry wood I have everywhere. I just spread a bunch if the spray on insect killer as well as the granules around the base of the house, but yeesh, may need to do it more. I hate spiders, and didnt realize black widows were that prevalent down here. and recluses are just the spawn of the devil, what purpose is there for that God?

Just what I need to hear. I live in that area and already have random bugs coming in. For all I know there's a family of black widows hiding out somewhere in my closet.

Went to Lowe's yesterday to get spray. EVERY can, container or jug says "kills spiders excepy brown recluse and black widows". I bought two different kinds and sprayed the entire perimeter of my house, entry ways, windows, and all the mulched areas in my yard. I walk down the front steps today to take the garbage out, and what do you know? Black widow hanging between the garbage can and the house. Sprayed it witht the Ortho Home Defense and waited about 30 minutes. Nothing. Sucker was still alive. Hit it with the second can and the same thing. I just dont know outside of my size 13 what else to kill them with. That leaves no chance of prevention with a 1 year old running around.

Add a lighter to the spray can and you've got an instant kill there. Also, a possible insurance claim.

So these 2 types of spiders are not only the most dangerous thing you'll find around here they can't be killed with pesticide? They're like some kind of super human killers. I know I've seen some kind of sprays that have a black widow pictured on the can though. I'll have to look around next time I'm out.

I am so doing this with the next one I find. Isn't that how they killed the queen in Arachnophobia? I'll let you guys know how it works. I normally find them after it's been rainy.
