Sly Fox wrote:We do that at convo on a semi-regular basis. But graduations typically are more for external splash than the grads themselves.

I admit I used to be a bit disappointed that I could never get a convo invite back when I was in my television days. The work I do these days wouldn't be as scintillating to 18- to 22-year-olds.

Oh come on...99% of what you do cant be said publicly...until your confidentiality agreement ends LU isnt interested!

Hold Palin until 2011. Maybe she would announce her candidacy for President from our stage.

Back in the day, we were heavy big time preachers and politicians. Of course Ollie North didn't fit into either category even though he was certainly political.
I mentioned my "Ollie North for President" bumper sticker to a co-worker the other day and they had no idea who I was talking about

....sigh

do ya'll have any more suggestions that are serious? after all, you know jerry reads the board so if you actually come up with someone good he may consider it.

the 2 best ones i've heard mentioned on here are palin and dungy. i don't like any of the others that have been tossed out

I wasn't serious about Toby Mac or Hess. I don't think either of them are much for "speechafyin". Those were just the first 2 LU grads I thought of with some fairly impressive post-school accomplishments. Karl is a PHD psychologist, and has (or had) a private clinical practice. I don't think he sees many patients during basketball season though. Seems like every major game I tune in on the tube he's there in stripes.

How about Newt Gingrich or even Michael Steele the new head of the RNC. Kelsey Grammer is a believer he would be a decent speaker for graduation even.

I think it would be awesome to have one of them speak here sometime, but right now isn't it. there is a bad taste in too many people's mouth towards them I think. maybe next year after we miss bush when obama ruins the country we could have him speak

Sports Figures:

Jim Tressel (outstanding Christian man with a new book that's also with the same publisher as Dungy)
Tony Dungy - has a new book out about young people being "uncommon" and living Christians lives
Kurt Warner - This guy is the REAL DEAL, nothing about him is fake. He has the true under dog story from grocery worker to future NFL Hall of Famer and he's accepting offers to speak for different locations so if he's free he'd do it

My pick

Bobby Richardson - I know we could get him (he'll be just a few states away and a quick trip wont be an issue during that time) and he's seriously one of the greatest speakers you'll ever hear and that's a promise, former Liberty AD & Baseball coach and for those who dont know him he played back in the Glory days with the Yanks when Mantle and others were around...I've heard hundreds of speeches even from those who've been paid up to $50,000 just to appear and he blew all of them away....had he played longer he would be HOF material however he had kids and wanted to spend more time with them....I've never seen him give a speech where he didnt get a standing ovation....I'm biased though but I'm sure Sly and others who've heard him will back me up

Political & Entertainers:

Sarah Palin - I think she would rather wait and I think we should too
J.C. Watts - I'm starting to think I'm obsessed with him and I'm trying as hard as I can to push this guy back into politics, I had Dinner with 2 of the heads for the Heritage foundation (now their president wouldnt be bad either) and I even pushed them towards joining my cause....they didnt disagree....he's now in business so he'll talk a little politics and a lot of business which would be a nice mix
John Maxwell - with the way our economy is I'd love to hear someone speak about business and the economy rather then just politics and John is one of the best motivational speakers in the business, not just Christian business
Ben Stein - Just came out with a Christian movie, he's a truly brilliant man and would be very entertaining, I actually think I'd rather hear him then Miller below (because he's a very strong Christian and he allowed LU to view his movie before it came out)

My Pick
Dennis Miller - This guy fought against Hollywood head on during this last election, he'll be funny, he's said before he's a Christian then later people questioned him on it and he tried to elaborate on how he doesnt believe in baptists etc and they took it as he wasnt...but he is, he'll tell you.

I will add more as I think of them and just edit my post

Bobby was one of the coolest cats to ever slide around campus. And I agree wholeheartedly that he is an outstanding speaker.

Kurt Warner has improved tremendously as a speaker and we are working on getting him at our church in the coming months.

The whole idea of having a speaker is to inspire the grads and get a little pub for the school.

I don't believe his health is up to it, but a return visit by Billy Graham would be epic (even though he is a preacher  ).
