I am saying it would be a nightmare to have to cut a larger road up the mountain to accomadate traffic, thats not being a snob at all but rather living in reality. That cost would be astronomical, heck i am all for the golf course and a resort or something but those little rustburgs roads would need millions to accomdate a freakin amusement park.
The road construction as a whole in this town is the worst in america and it takes months to built a simple small road ( see the cut through to old forest road over by home depot)

While Liberty Village may not be associated with LU, are you going to tell me its not going to be a gigantic eye sore sitting between the campus and an amusement park......If Jerry wants this he may be forced to get involved.

I never said the Toyota plant was bad thing, but the burg is out of land to build it.....may campbell or bedford county though.

We do need certain development in this town....but placement, variety ( not putting mutliple of the same stores which is being proposed right now for that gigantic 221 shopping center) and need is key. Example : we need a stadium seat theather as opposed to these old crappy ones....or we need a ukrop's not another Kroger! Why can't we build a high class golf course with a sweet view?( i hear the redone course downtown is awful after millions spent there) Heck Jerry should invest in a mall that actually resembles a mall in the rest of America, we need something unique, not something that everyone says " Yea lets go to that Dollywood thing in Lynchburg" .......

LUconn, thanks for saying that about the separation b/t Liberty Village and Liberty, the only thing that took a hit in that deal was our name and the people who bought a home...Liberty was paid in advance and is now helping the families try and get their money back

First of all, the primary entrance road would likely be Hwy 501. Google calls that stretch Campbell Highway. That road is actually fairly decent and it wouldn't take much to widen it. As for Lynchburg's roads, gimme a break! Have you been anywhere else. Virginia's roads as compared to other states, especially other states with actual winter weather, are phenomenal. Try driving through PA (no offense, Medic) or WV sometime. I'll admit that the Old Graves Mill Road cut-through took a while to get off the ground but that was largely because of so many private entities involved. Actual construction on that area has only been going on since early this year.

Yeah, so? When has he not? Actually, if he's going to build a park up there, JF Jr. would be wise to buy it up before someone else does.

I can't even begin to fathom this paragraph. First, you sound exactly like Lynchburg City Council. We need this but we don't need that even though, longterm, both would be good for the city. By being so picky, the Burg shoots itself in the foot economically everytime. The rest I'll just touch on:
* Who cares what kind of seating you have in your theater if you force the theater into the wrong location (the Plaza)?
* We have so many Krogers because Harris Teeter and Kroger cut a deal in which Harris Teeter signed over most of its VA stores to Kroger and Kroger signed over most of their NC stores to Harris Teeter. Personally, I think that's a violation of anti-trust laws but nobody asked me. Ukrops, to my knowledge, has never attempted to put a store in Lynchburg.
* We have a high class golf course with a sweet mountain view. It's called Poplar Grove and it was the last course designed by Sam Snead. Of course, I would guess that any course JF built on top of Candler's Mountain would also have a sweet mountain view.
* In the same sentence, you state that we need something unique and that we should invest in a mall that resembles every other mall in the rest of America. First, I don't see why we should invest in a new mall when no one shops in the one we have. Secondly, by the very nature of its founder and its theme, any park built here would be in and of itself unique.

To me, the bottom line is that there are a lot more positives to this than there are negatives.

First, the roads comment wasn't a shot at the shape of the overall roads, it was a shot at the idiots who decided yield lanes should be placed everywhere. The lanes give people zero chance to merge during rush hour and can't currently hold the amount of cars flowing through them without backing up traffic for miles.( I won't even get into how many rear end accidents i see daily when traveling home) I grew up in the Northeast so yes i have seen worse roads but never have a seen worse planning system for roads in a city.

Next, where on 501 is the entrace going to be? I thought the only logical way was to travel past campus ( which Jerry is going to want) up to his amusement park which would take you up the hill past the Wingate. That road has rock just over the white lines and is not that wide. Not enough for 2 lanes on each side which is what a huge attraction would need or at least i think so.

The contruction on Graves mill cut through has taken months for a glorified on ramp with a light.....thats ridiculous. I can't tell you how many times i can drive by and see 1 guy working and 5 "supervising" or staring at the supposed progress.

I think Jerry Jr. might be very wise to buy the Village, he is a lawyer so i am sure the could work some majic on the price tag as well.

Like it or not part of this community is attracting tons of retired people from the south and other areas, since the cost of living here is very cheap. I was talking about putting the stadium seat theatre in the new 221 shopping center which is already supposed to have "upper class" stores along with some duplicates that we already have in town.

Ukrops just moved into Roanoke so they aren't that far away and rumor had it they were talking about putting one in the new plaza in forest where the post office is, but i don't know how far those talks got.

Anyone who listens to espn radio knows where and who designed popular grove since all they do is advertise it. But i think if designed right this course would be more centralized.....isn't Poplar Grove in Amherst or something? Plus you need a nice double deck driving range and a NICE mini golf outlet for all those who aren't skilled enough to play 18. When Tiny Toons or whatever it is can make $$$ on Timberlake.....there is plenty of room for growth.

If no one shopped in this town why bring in an Old Navy and Kohls ...? The mall charges outrageous rates to rent any space and thats why stores leave.....and the management i hear is awful, could be a reason it sucks. But even if we don't build a mall, the park you speak of better be unique, or people won't come when they can get the same thrills at a Six Flags or something else.

There are positives i agree, but Liberty in general "rushes" into things and i think this one needs a lot of planning and not a dive into the pool.

I'm as anti-Flynn as anyone else in this town, and I certainly haven't appreciated City Council's past actions toward LU. However, I think this whole thing is just an enormously bad idea. Of all the things we could be spending money on right now, I just don't see something like this being justifiable. I think its ridiculous, and quite frankly, stupid. I hope nothing ever comes of it.

For whoever said we needed a stadium seat theater, just hang tight. Two are on the way, pending approval of the famed Lynchburg City Council, of course.

After re-reading the article, I've come to the conclusion that this is really more a case of Jerry shooting his mouth off than anything else. As evidence, I would point out that -- even though he said he wanted to build Dollywood -- what Jerry actually described in the attributed quotes was Wintergreen, not Dollywood. Furthermore, with all the necessary construction we have going on, there's no possible way that we could launch into something like this within the next two years, at least. If the time comes that JF Jr. decides this is a good idea, then it might have a good shot at really happening but, until then, we on the message boards and WLNI should probably all just take a chill on this one.
