There are 129 individual halls on campus, not counting the dorms where one floor is for laundry or something like that. You would have to run the actual cable, set up the head end stuff, and get licensing for all of that. It's way more than $50 a semester. $50 a month probably wouldn't even cover it. The startup costs are ridiculous.

It's obvious that this guy just missed a football game yesterday and is venting. Boohoo. Let's make everyone else pay for your tv-watching habits.

Also, do you charge the 4000 off-campus students the same cable fee you charge the on-campus students? That doesn't seem quite fair. Give us a solution.

solution: go outside and do something instead of sitting around watching tv all day.
for sports... who wants to watch that in a dorm room? go off campus. I was able to get several games through IPTV that I had hooked to a tv in my room, but I still went off campus because I didn't like watching in the dorms. its too small and too many distractions. If you have no where off campus to go.. get out of your room and make some friends

oh and btw, not only was the student center open for superbowl but student activities through a party for it, so you missed on that argument.

do like other schools do: charge students who live on campus and dont charge students who live off-campus. Lynhcburg Coll. does it and I know of a few others that do that as well.

as far as setup costs, charge everyone for it because it would be considered general facility upgrades.

For cable? Sure, if this were 1982. At that point, why not make sure everyone has an electric typewriter and a mimeograph machine in their rooms as well?

actually every room does have a cable hookup already. At least on Campus Original. They went in with the ethernet cables. They may lead to nothing though but I assumed it was for a future upgrade.

I am afraid it is.

He's an Obama supporter, too. Take that as you wish.

adding cable is an upgrade if it doesn't currently exist. it most certainly sounds like an upgrade over the current iptv

It's cool that ya'll have ESPNU, but I'll take Cable TV every time. No wonder whenever I talk to one of my friends at Liberty she says she doesn't have a TV...i always thought that was weird.

Some of the rooms had drops pulled from a closet to the rooms, but that's it. I think it was there as a "Maybe down the road and it's easier to do it while we pull in Ethernet" kind of thing. There was never anything connected to the dorms, though. I'm not even sure the coax is still there.

Not being able to DVR or record anything is the biggest negative for IPTV in my opinion, but I really like what we have so I'm not complaining. I think the quality is good and I think being able to pull it up anywhere on campus is pretty amazing. With the 802.11n upgrades going on, IPTV is actually pretty nice.

+1

I can remember the absolute thrill we had when the senior dorms went up in 88/89, knowing that there would be a TV in every hall. Of course, that was broadcast TV, not cable.

The more things improve, the more people gripe. Almost enough to make you believe in Total Depravity ;)
