I think Scorcho seems more annoyed that everybody thinks that the school is doing the wrong thing. You've got to assume they've compared the price of fixing the buidling with the price of a new building. The folks in charge aren't exactly amateurs.

i just don't understand getting all upset about people being a little critical...no matter if its a school, business or whatever, people are going to be critical of it...no need to let it bother you that much....plus i still think the situation is funny....only because i don't have to deal with it

Well there have been comments going around like "band aid on the titanic" and a few other jokes...if I didnt know yall better I would think that you dont trust the steps that LU is taking...I promise you that they are taking EVERY step possible...is this the solution for the next 5 to 10 years? No...but this will meet the standards that are enforceable by law...believe me there are 10-15 people at LU that would be able to handle this situation alone and they are all working together on this so no worries, some of the best minds in central virginia are working on this

You make a good point but bring up a question....if this isn't the solution ( fixing the dorm ) for the next 5-10 years, why waste the money and not just blow it up? I mean why are you paying $$$ to fix something when it appears you feel its not a long term solution?

Perhaps HMO knows plans that we don't yet. Such as completely redoing the circle 5 years from now? In a situation like that, we need the space that this building provides, so just patch it up unitl we're ready to demolish.

i know, but its jokes...mere jokes...we don't know the whole process, so therefore there are going to be questions...again this comes with the territory when you run a college or business or anything, people are going to ask questions...i don't think there is anything wrong with that

Fixing the problem will cost peanuts compared to what the costs of the other options we are talking about. During the school year is NOT the time to tear something down...if this is going to be done look for it to happen in the summer...even Christmas break would probably be to short

I mean think about it....look at the dorms around the circle...do you think these fit in the long term goals of Liberty University? It's just a matter of time before something is done but obviously with them correcting this problem rather than starting new, the time isnt now. But like I said before, trust the people making decisions they are more than qualified.

EDIT: Postman, I know they were jokes, people were just wondering why Scorcy was defensive...honestly having worked at the University and been apart of decisions that people question that can easily happen b/c I was on the defense a lot. For whatever reason it seems that LU students question before accept (which isnt wrong, it's just different from other schools I've seen) I honestly believe it's b/c ALOT of students come from a small Christian school where if something happens that a few parents dont like it doenst take much for a correction to be made (thats no different then when I was at LCA)....I think that is the main reason though

well from every school situation i have been in...I was i public school for 10 of those years...it was natural for people to question things...and in other schools i have friends at they are constantly complaining to me about certain things the administration is doing....its just part of life...and i understand when you personally have worked at a place its hard not to jump to the defensive...but when you work at a large university it just something the comes with the territory and i believe its good...it keeps the leaders on their toes

I agree, we just listen more than most...

I mean where else could you go to a school where a facebook group starts about changes they want to see with transportation and theres like 5 members yet we still met with them to hear all of their concerns....only at LU I tell ya only at LU

you're right...that is something liberty has really improved...caring about what students think....it didn't seem to be that way when i first got here

My problem is, as stated, that everyone constantly questions things here. Constantly. Some questioning is healthy, but at the level it happens around here, it's quite apparent to me that there are trust issues. Students are just dying to pull the trigger on an accusation of money being wasted or something not being done in the most efficient possible manner. If it were just questioning, it might even be tolerable. It's the complaining, accusations and whining that pushes me over the edge.

It just gets old, very quickly, to hear your colleagues questioned repeatedly as if they're doofuses who aren't fit for their jobs. And that's what it all really amounts to. People don't think LU has quality/qualified/competent employees. I understand that from the student's perspective that the university feels huge, but you all need to understand that it doesn't take that many people to run a place of this size. When you make a criticism on here, you're directly criticizing one or two people, whether you realize it or not.

So yeah, pretty easy for me to get defensive about it. It's only because I care.

again, i get your point...but when you take a job at a university you must realize this comes with the territory....I stick up for liberty so much out in lynchburg, especially at my job....i love liberty and am thankful for what this place has done for me....but there is always room for improvement and i don't think there is anything wrong with questioning...but i think this is something you and probably won't see eye to eye on and thats fine with me i suppose

news:
November 9, 2007

Helical anchor installation continues. A total of 35 helical anchors have now been installed. Work on the interior of the building continues as well.

Chancellor Jerry Falwell, Jr. met with students from RH 7 today after Convocation. He told them they should be able to move back in to their residence hall either right before or right after the Thanksgiving break. The exact date of the move will be determined by how quickly the contractors can properly complete the work. He assured them we would work as rapidly as possible, with student safety being the main concern.

November 12, 2007

The work on helical anchor installation continued on Saturday, November 10. A total of 55 anchors have now been installed. Upon further review, it was determined that a total of 106 anchors would be needed. Anchor installation will continue this week.

New ceiling tile installation continues, as well as floor work.

November 13, 2007

Helical anchor installation is now complete on the back side of RH 7. Contractors have moved to the ends and front of the building, continuing additional helical anchor installation. Ten anchors were installed yesterday, November 12, bringing the total to 65 anchors.

Contractors are working on interior rooms, making preparation for block and flooring repair where needed.

Talking to some friends at Longwood and now having actually stayed in a Longwood dorm room, I suddenly don't feel so bad about how LU's dorms on Main Campus are set up. They have the same problems some of ya'll have had with pipes bursting and what not.
