When you all enter Williams Stadium on Saturday, look for the bust of Mr. Rogers and pay your respects. He was an LU adminstrator, WWII vet, and a POW.

A wonderful and gifted man whos hard work and wisdom has more to do with the current success of LU than most of us will ever know.

I don't have them memorized, but I can tell you where to find them.

I would not be opposed to a memorial, but I'd want to see it done right the first time so it doesn't have to get moved around 100 times to accommodate construction like everything else.

Here's an idea. Assuming my suggestion about an actual dedicated building for OMA and IMR doesn't pan out (probable). We know there's a new prayer chapel going up on South Campus in the coming years. The old one isn't going to be torn down, and the National Civil War Chaplains Museum is located right next door now. Place a granite monument or other marker in the old chapel with the names of Liberty students who have been killed in the line of duty, and then rededicate the building in honor and memory of all those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country and freedoms. Now you actually have a campus landmark dedicated to the fallen, that doubles as a place where memorial services can be held as well as Veterans Day prayer meetings or other such tributes.

Mystery solved about that fenced in rectangular patch of grass (see below).

Old timers will remember that between the old gym and the old tennis courts there was a rock with a plaque on it that designated, I think, a family cemetery that was once part of that land. Looking from the Scholars Lounge balcony in the library, I could easily see that same rock and plaque at the center of that fenced in area.

I do remember that...I didn't realize it was in the same area though. I don't remember exactly what was on the plaque, either.

Also, remember that big new concrete pad outside the Vines Center? Today the are covering it with cobblestones.

But the big news is that today they have begun tearing down the old Fine Arts building and pulling up all the trees and bushes that used to be in the courtyard behind DeMoss.

I figured they would start that soon. They're supposed to be able to start laying foundations for the Campus Center this month or next.

Just curious. Do they try to "recycle" the shrubs and trees and use them elsewhere on campus or are they trashed?

Some serious facepalm, watching all of social media going "ZOMG WHY ARE THEY TEARING UP THE COURTYARD!?!1?!/1!" yesterday. My gosh, have these people really not been paying attention to anything the university's said about its building plan over the last three years?! Even I didn't think the student body was that tuned out. Guess I'd forgotten how much resident students (present company excluded) whine about pretty much everything Liberty does.

On a side note, I completely forgot to tune in to Convocation this morning to hear JFJR welcome the student body, so I have no idea if he said anything about current or future building projects. Unless somebody who was there can fill in for me, y'all will have to wait until I can watch the recording.

When Liberty tears down old buildings, they go through a salvage process to harvest any materials that may be reusable. I don't think the university keeps them, I think they sell them to people who can recycle them. They may do a similar process with at least some of the plants, but I'm not sure.

Flamesfanva wrote:Speaking of memorials, when will LU build a memorial to honor those military members who lost their lives defending liberty, while also being either a current student or alumni? LU claims to be so military friendly, yet no memorial?

kudos to LU/ ROLLING THUNDER OF VA CH 4, and a great start

I noticed that when I checked my twitter this morning and I agree...that is an awesome gesture. We now know that not every seat will be filled on gamedays, but its for a good reason. Definitely a bit of a surprise and can't wait to check it out when I come into town

Well it's not as if Williams Stadium regularly fills to the max anyway. But it is a great idea, and will be even more meaningful as the football program and stadium grow. Hopefully they will actually call attention to it on Military Appreciation Day, or even at the start of every home game before the anthem is played.

Liberty has this picture of Convocation up from this morning (in addition to seemingly endless pictures from social media): Image

IMO, that new LED lighting totally changes the ambiance of Convocation, and definitely for the better.

Nothing about any new building projects at convo today. JFJR recognized the people involved in buildings that have already been finished. Most of his time at the podium was dedicated to telling an embarrassing story about his daughter.

Agreed BYD...as much as I'm glad to see the new things going up, it kinda feels like losing another part of my history on the mountain with the buildings coming down where I spent a lot of my time

According to the Liberty Dining website, Dunkin' Donuts has moved to a "temporary location" in the Vines Center effective tomorrow, ostensibly to accommodate the demolition of Dorm 14. Still no word on its next permanent home, though I think the Campus Center is the most likely.

Thanks. Guess we will be waiting a bit longer. I have my eye on the Liberty Journal coming out in two weeks.

Very nice job with the POW/MIA missing man chair. Thanks to Rolling Thunder Chapter 4 for covering the costs and thanks to LU for allowing it. Don't know of a another stadium that has that. Shows that LU respects the military and honors their sacrifices.

So I might actually be able to take a nice picture at basketball games now. :D Never could seem to get a nice shot when zoomed. I was able to get some nice shots last year at the ice arena since they switched to LED lighting.

Frankly, I'm starting to get a little confused about what I thought was going to be an amphitheater. Today, several large trees were delivered there to be planted, and right now the unplanted trees are scattered throughout the rows of the "amphitheater". If the trees are going to be planted where they are laying, it would seemingly block the view of of any group performing down below.

Maybe the trees are supposed to give that part of campus more of a park-like setting? :dontgetit
