Does anyone know, or can anyone find out, when LU is going to update the Master Plan on the website? I know they'll just change it again anyway, but it hasn't been updated in like 9 months now, and from everything we've heard, they've changed a lot since then. In case anyone wanted a list: the Olympic Sports Complex, changes to the Landmark Tower area,
changes to the Residential Commons area, changes to the Religion Hall area, and I'm sure there are others.
Since I'm here and asking a question, I might as well answer one. PAmedic, according to Amy Trent of the News & Advance, Liberty is to begin construction of the Olympic Sports Center on East Campus sometime in the spring: http://www.newsadvance.com/news/local/l ... f6878.html (check the very last sentence)
They are changing the Master Plan so fast they can't keep up. That awesome
Irrelevant. At this point, even a three-month-old Master Plan that has since been changed 12 times would be more useful than a nine-month-old Master Plan that has since been changed 36 times. The first update to the website came six months after the initial posting, and there have been no updates since. I, for one, get frustrated when sweeping changes to the plan are mentioned, with no way to see how it fits into the overall picture. And it's not as if Liberty is in the habit of waiting to provide such information until it's 100% final.
Since this is essentially a Master Plan discussion thread, here are the major changes I've noticed since the website was last updated on 11/15/13.
Lakeside Dining Hall and VMDO-Designed Housing
This one was addressed briefly by President Falwell in the publicly broadcast Spring 2014 All-Faculty Meeting. This replaces the original plan to put a new dining hall in the Landmark Tower (Liberty Journal Spring 2014). The project is to incorporate more high-rise housing, but these buildings are designed by VMDO and are clearly of a different breed than the existing Residential Commons project across the lawn (those buildings are designed by another architect, hence why they are shown here in nondescript white).
Campus Landmark Tower and Honors Quad
We know quite a lot about the Tower now, thanks to the Journal and local media. What has been pictured, but never mentioned, is the apparent companion demolition of Hill dorms M19-M21 to make way for another new building. Based on the label "Honors Quad" in the image, I assume the new building is an honors dorm like those at many other colleges, but there have been no details. In general, the Tower area as it appears on the old Master Plan does not at all match the current version of the project.
Unknown Changes to the Religion Hall Area
This one is the most cryptic/baffling to me. Upon careful examination of two different recent images (yes, I do have a life, before anyone asks), I noticed something interesting. The current Religion Hall does not appear to be present in either of these images; rather, it seems to have been replaced by a new, much-differently shaped building. My personal assumption is that it will be a new Religion Hall; since there was a plan in place to build one prior to the whole School of Music thing, it makes sense. The current Religion Hall will be the last slab building left on campus soon, and with all the new digs, Towns Auditorium is becoming a "jack of all trades, master of none" facility. A new Religion Hall that provides more space and amenities, and fits on its parcel better, leaving more room for the new eastern perimeter road, would be a welcome addition to the plan. There's also apparently going to be a new academic building in front of DeMoss, but again, there has been no official acknowledgment of the nature of either project.
If anyone has any declassified information about any of this stuff, feel free to share, I would love to hear it. Oh, and before anybody asks, all of these images appeared in the last several months from different sources, and are consistent with each other; in other words, they are not old images, nor are they faked in some way. They are from a combination of
