I don't understand the logic of a student who comes to Liberty and isn't happy for any reason. Whether that be because they're a dude who likes dudes or because they want to booze it up, I don't care. I don't get it. If you're not happy, there are so many other options for schools that I just can't understand why people feel the need to crash the LU party. There's no excuse for staying somewhere where you're not happy, or for trying to ruin it for the people who are completely happy with what LU is and what it stands for.

Why did they come when school is out? You'd think they'd want to make a big stink when all of the students are there.

whew.... just got back from campus. They made a mad rush for David's Place. I could only get one picture before I had to hightail it out of there. I fear they could advance toward the baseball field.

From the WSLS web site -
About 25 members of the Soulforce Equality Ride, an activist group seeking to discuss homosexual issues on Christian campuses, were arrested when they attempted to enter Liberty University on Friday afternoon.

The activists were greeted at the university entrance off U.S. 460 by LU police and several members of the Lynchburg Police Department.

As a number of media sources -- including a documentary film crew and MTV News -- stood by, the activists took turns stepping toward the university gate, reading from a prepared statement, and were then arrested for tresspassing by Maj. G.T. Berry of the LU police.

Liberty University issued a release from the Rev. Jerry Falwell last week saying that the riders would not be welcome on campus, as he considered their demonstration an effort to gain publicity for their cause.

For a more details, see Saturday's The News and Advance.
Gee....what a surprise 8) And somehow I don't think MTV was there to support LU's stance.

Opponents wrong about Liberty, gays
By Will Honeycutt
Lynchburg News & Advance
March 13, 2006

Equality Ride and Soulforce are aiming at a strawman. According to their Web site, the mission of Equality Ride is to “confront numerous religious and/or military colleges that ban the enrollment of GLBT (gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered) students.” They say, “these bans devalue the life of GLBT people and they slam the door on academic freedom.”

As a faculty of Liberty University I can say that identifying LU as one of the colleges that bans such students is faulty because there is nothing in our policies that says they cannot enroll. We are not on a witch hunt here.

In fact, there is nothing that says that they will lose their enrollment if they come out as such. What is subject to disciplinary action is pre-marital sexual behavior of any kind. But even if a student reveals that they are struggling with sexual issues, including same-sex attractions, they will be pointed to counseling for help, not kicked out.

As a professor of contemporary issues I can speak to this issue of “academic freedom” as well. I deal at length with the topic of homosexuality and the Bible. I have my students read an article from the Metropolitan Community Church Web site and introduce them to the thought and argument of Mel White, Bruce Bawer, Peter Gomes, and Troy Perry to name a few.

I carefully go through the latest arguments posed by pro-gay theology and then offer counter-arguments to uphold the traditional, and what we are still convinced is the biblical, view, that all same-sex erotic behavior is a sin. We find the arguments proffered by pro-gay theology lacking in logic and careful exegesis of biblical texts. Ours is a careful and critical conclusion reached after analysis, dialogue and deliberation.

The “preconceptions” are on the part of Equality Ride and Soulforce who think only we are blindly operating on preconceptions. We are aware of the issues and have thoughtfully engaged them. I would gladly discuss this in a civil manner or even public debate.

Finally, we are being accused of devaluing the life of these students. On the contrary, we value them so highly that we want to dissuade them into entering a lifestyle that has a higher risk of disease, despair and early death. In our public schools we crusade to keep kids off of tobacco and other substances due to their health risks and what can lead to early death.

To turn around and encourage them to fully embrace a lifestyle that can lead to even earlier disease and death seems inconsistent and lacking in true compassion. Even gay author Andrew Sullivan has stated “for gay men in America death is less an event than an environment.” That should tell us something, and biblical compassion moves us in the direction of preserving life, not promoting death.

Honeycutt is a professor of contemporary issues at Liberty University.

I can totally attest to the fact that Liberty will take action at any sexual discrestion outside of marriage - gay or straight. I just find it strange that people want to have rallies about what they do in their bedrooms or the backseat of their cars or whatever. I don't want to know!
BTW- you all were not gossiping like women - we are much more caddy and would give names and such.

Hmm think there is a story there. But none of my biz. I agree, let the bedroom/noctornal activities stay away from the public eye. You don't see me and FSN advertising our weekends on here do you?

Gays, Muslims to play in soccer tournament
AMSTERDAM, Netherlands (AP) - A Dutch multicultural group is organizing a soccer tournament between gays and Muslims, hoping to counter what a study published on Thursday said was a rising tide of fear among gays.

RACISM RUNS RAMPANT
A nationwide survey by the Police Research Academy said that most gays questioned feel unsafe and reported experiencing verbal attacks in the last year.

Of the 776 homosexuals who responded to an internet questionnaire, 80 percent said they believed their safety was threatened at some time during the year, said academy director Frits Vlek, who commissioned the research.

Only 3 percent said they were physically assaulted, Vlek said in an interview, but some 40 percent claimed they had been insulted or verbally abused.

Youths from Moroccan and Turkish backgrounds often were blamed for the incidents, Vlek said, since homosexuality is not widely accepted in many Muslim cultures.

"Parts of the Muslim community still resist homosexuality and receive little education about it," he said.

Muslim-gay tension is the theme of the soccer tournament organized by the Institute of Multicultural Development, to be held next week.

An organizer of the group, Suzanne Ijsselmuiden, said she hoped the competition will "help ease these tensions so that people can openly talk about homosexuality."

Gay Muslims can take their choice of teams, she said. "People can have many identities."

A Latin team along with a team of all-women players has also been assembled for the government-sponsored competition.
