A Liberty University student died Thursday night after a single-vehicle wreck in Lynchburg.

Josiah Richmond Rose, 21, of New York, was driving near the U.S. 501 interchange with Graves Mill Road when his 2002 Triumph motorcycle crashed.

I did not know him or anything, but I saw this story in the news and advance and was very surprised. I don't know if they talked about it in convo yesterday or not since I don't go to convo, but its always sad when such people this young die...

I knew the kid. I had GNED with him and worked at Dick's with him. Seemed like a good kid, but he liked to go very fast on his bike. When I read this thread title, he's the first person that came to mind. He lived off of McConville too, so he was about a mile away from home.

He got a ticket for 85 in a 35 back in the fall. I can only pray that he wasn't going that fast again.

It's tragic, and I feel horrible for his family. Speeding and recklessness aside, there's a large assumed risk that one takes just by choosing to get on a motorcycle. This is made very clear in the safety courses that most states offer you the opportunity to take in place of your driving exam. The risk factor is, for many, negated by the fun/freedom factor of riding a motorcycle. However, if you're responsible for anyone other than yourself (especially people who anyone who couldn't survive without you in any sense), please think long and hard before you get on a bike.

This sort of risk is exactly why I'm selling my motorcycle right now. The risk factor is just much too high for me to accept anymore.

If you ride, be careful out there and please ride safely.

A few years ago I bought a nice Ducati SS. After it was delivered it sat in my garage as I pondered where in Seattle I would feel safe riding it. The answer was nowhere and I sold it a few months later. Maybe when I move back to Lynchburg with all the country roads I'll think it over again. I rode lots in my younger days and was very lucky as I never crashed or got hit.
