My wife, one year old son, and I are planning a move to the burg this summer. I am an LU grad (1998) and am looking to work on a Master’s degree. I have been reading FlameFans for several months now and thought I would get your thoughts.

Where would be a good place to get an apartment?

How is the job market?

Does anyone know about Daycare?

I would love to get any input you might have on these questions or general advice about moving back to Lynchburg. Thanks!

You should have posted sooner. The more the merrier.

I've only had experience with County Green. Nice place to live. They have a tanning bed you can use for free. Not the cheapest around but it's certainly not the most expensive it town either

Depends on what you're looking for and who you know. There's lots of retail stuff available. If you're looking for something a little more professional. THe pickings are a tad slim. If you have good networking skills you should be fine. I know I dont.

My wife will do it, as long as it's at my house. I've got a 1 year old as well. She charges like $8/hr though. I know that's not for everybody. Otherwise I'm not familiar with the local daycare.

My advice, you will be lulled into town seeing the low cost of living and then shocked the first time you pay $6+ dollars for a combo meal at Arbys. (food tax is redunkulous.)

Not to dissuade you from returning to the mountain to get the advanced degree, but what about the option of choosing a location based on the best job offer you can get and then going the DLP route?

I am transitioning from student ministry to adult ministry (probably senior pastorate). I want to get an MAR in 2-3 years - then find a church and work on my MDIV DLP.

Not a bad path. Those are legitimate reasons to want to be in person. And I'm guessing Lynchburg is sounding particularly sweet right now after a long winter in Cadillac.

I ask this because I simply don't know: how many days of week do seminary students have class? I know some schools do it where you only have class once, maybe twice a week.

If that was the case, I would look in Roanoke or Charlottesville or something in those areas (maybe not in the city limits) where you may be able to find better work. Danville is an option as well. All are within an hour drive.

Cost of living in Charlotteville is 3 to 5 times higher than Lynchburg. Stay in the 'burg!

There are some relatively new townhouse apartments here. Two stories, two bedrooms, W/D hookup, good size kitchen and living area should run you less than $600 per month, unless rent has really gone up in the past few years, which is entirely possible.

Stay out of the 'Burg. Look for something in Cambell County.

Campbell County is definitely cheaper than the 'burg, if you don't mind living in a more rural area. The Rustburg area is a very small town and very affordable--and every close to Lynchburg.

You also might want to look at houses in the City/county of Bedford. Bedofrd is about a 20 minute drive to Lynchburg and about 30 minutes from Roanoke. The city tax rates are a little bit more that the county though.

Also, clear those Saturdays for football. I am moving to Lynchburg this spring/summer and can't wait to go to football games and hang out at the flamefans.com tailgates. Last year was great.

I'm envious too because everyone wants into Lynchburg it seems and I am looking to move away. Don't worry though, I will be around Liberty a lot for football and of course Hoops.

If you end up in the Bedford area, I can recommend a VERY good Christian pre-school / daycare.

If Alabama is looking for an apt he probably won't be in the market for the Manor :D...Medic, you still have the spring game. You and the MRS can stay there if you wish and I promise I can talk MRS SCAR into making the cookies. Then can I have your blessing to move to Richmond? I have not put the house up just yet because you make me feel like I need to stay
