what are they projecting enrollment to be: 50?

GLAD will have that many picketing the campus each day for the first 4 months, I'm betting.

Now the big question? Will RC be bound by Title IX for its athletic program? The letter of the law is supposed to work both ways. I'd almost love to be the guy that brings the lawsuit for not having ample mens sport opportunities.

I was wondering what they would do considering the Randy Mac coed school already exists. Mr. Macon has been more than duly honored. Everytime I think of that school I remember the TP shower duoing the tourney game at RMC where the janitor was'nt prepared and it seemed like forever to clean the floor. Good times. :)

Someone who really enjoys conflict would have fun there. I know a few guys like that. Good luck getting a date, though.

I would imagine that a large portion of the "W" population there doesn't swing that way, anyhow. The RC guys will have to come to LU to look for action.

Warning: R-MWC in financial trouble

By Blair Goldstein

December 20, 2006

Randolph-Macon Woman’s College has received a warning from its accrediting institution citing operating budget deficits and delayed building maintenance, the college said Wednesday.

The warning, from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, also flagged the college’s high tuition-discount rate as an area of concern, the college said in a statement.

The warning, which will be in place for a year, reflects the board of trustees’ financial concerns and its decision to open the school to men next year, said Ginger Worden, interim president of R-MWC.

The board voted in September to begin admitting men next fall. Earlier this month, the college announced its name would change to Randolph College beginning July 1, 2007.

In an interview Wednesday, Worden said the college plans to regain financial stability by going coed and focusing on its global honors program.

Worden said she is meeting with the Atlanta-based Southern Association of Colleges and Schools next month to discuss the school’s financial plan.

“We think the plan that (the board) put in place will in fact meet the issues that have been raised here and we are confident that this really is a temporary situation,” said Worden.

“We intend to work with (the accrediting institution) to ensure that our business strategy is a sound one and that the college will be on a much more secure financial footing as we go forward.”

The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools grants accreditation to institutions in 11 states, including Lynchburg College, Liberty University and Sweet Briar College.

According to Belle Wheelan, president of the accrediting institution’s Commission on Colleges, the commission first grants warnings when a problem is found. If an institution does not resolve the problem it will be placed on probation or dismissed.

“(R-MWC) is still fully accredited,” said Wheelan. “It just sent up a red flag that we said ‘Whoa. Wait a minute. There’s something going on here. Let’s take a look and be careful before something bad does go on here.’”

At its Dec. 11 meeting, the Commission on Colleges placed four other colleges or universities on warning.

Although R-MWC has a $140 million endowment, college officials have expressed concern about its financial stability.

Worden said there is a declining interest in women’s colleges and that 99 percent of current students at the college receive some form of financial aid.

In September, the college said it was reviewing all of its assets as part of its strategic planning process. The financial committee said the Reading program in England, the college’s extensive artwork collection and the riding centers were among the things being looked at.

In an effort not to overextend the college’s endowment, Worden said some building projects have been delayed. She said work on the athletic facility and library have not yet begun. She said some buildings still do not have air conditioning, and need it.

“I think our college doesn’t suffer extraordinarily from deferred maintenance but we do certainly have some building projects that we need to attend to,” Worden said.

Employees of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools visited R-MWC to review two new master’s programs in education. Those programs did receive accreditation.

Worden said the accrediting institution also reviewed the college’s finances while on campus. The warning came following that review.

The deferred maintenance is threatening your accreditation! How much more extraordinarily do you have to suffer from it for it to qualify?! Nowhere in the report does it state that unresolved building projects are an issue but that's what the prez is focussing on?! No wonder they're in trouble!

This will be interesting to watch and I hope they make it as RC provides a nice anchor to the eastern portion of the Boonsboro neighborhood. They had reps out in Seattle at both college fairs this year with a big sign advertising that it was now co-ed. If they can enroll a normal sized class and not lose too many to transfer I think they'll be OK. They can't afford to drop down to just 600 or so. Lots of schools have problems with maintenance--UVa looked really bad a few years ago due to the budget cuts. Now they are working through it.
