We have had Verizon DSL for 5 years now because it has been our only option. Shentel has just expanded to our neighborhood. We are looking at 5MB service. Thoughts? Tips to getting best price?

Thanks for the link. I called them and the prices are higher and they have added caps.

Does anyone have experience with DSL Extreme? We are currently paying $50 + taxes for 3 MB service & a telephone line we don't use ($11 mo). I have read about DSL Extreme before, but don't know anyone who uses it. For "verizon" lines, they have offered us $25 mo for 3 MB speed.

I moved to Shentel (10MB plan) and wouldn't go back to Verizon for anything. While it's still not ideal, I don't have any issues with losing connectivity or my router automatically resetting several times a day, like I did with Verizon. Also, I've only had one outage with Shentel, and when I called them, they immediately knew that they were doing maintenance in the area and it was cleared up in less than 15 minutes. I couldn't have gone through the stupid, "reboot your router; reboot your PC; unplug your filter, etc." routine with Verizon in that amount of time.

The ONLY issues I have are when my daughter in law comes to town and connects, and all Apple products lose connection after a while. I think I finally fixed that last night by adding the DNS servers to her network properties. They should have picked them up from the router, but for some reason they didn't.

At this point, my greatest concern is the caps on data. We are "cord cutters" and use netflix, amazon prime, and hulu exclusively for all content. Additionally, I have software that updates very regularly.

We use Netflix and Hulu, too. My cap with the 10MB plan is 300GB per month, and looking at my previous usage for the past few months, I've never exceeded 200GB and my average is around 150GB. Plus, I work from home, so I'm constantly using the service from 8:30 - 5:30 daily, including pulling software updates both from my company FTP site and Windows. I would say contact them and find out what the cap would be. I think they also had a 30 day 'trial period' that if it didn't work for you, but you obviously would need to confirm with Shentel that still exists.

I'm not familiar with Shentel, but most caps are high enough to the point where only people who live in their parents basement watching HD movies and downloading porn all day at the same time would reach the cap. Well that and Mormon households with 8 wives and 72 children.
