From the article:
Liberty spokeswoman Johnnie Moore said in a statement, "Liberty University is pleased that the charges against Cole Withrow were reduced to a misdemeanor, but we still believe this is more punishment than he deserves."
Yes. Yes they did. :I chortle audibly.:
I think the punishment fits the crime. According to the article, it sounds like the kid actually did forget he had them, but when he had the opportunity to take them home, he forgot, then got caught. IMO, typical of a HS age kid.
As for the scholarship, meh. Probably wasn't the best thing in the world but its sorta par for the course. It's not like he thinks we should hang gays in Uganda or anything like that.
If he did this AND came out that he was gay, would he still keep his scholarship??
While I wasn't exactly totally and completely "out," per se, my last year of grad school, it was no secret with the higher ups that I was "struggling with homosexuality," and I stayed in on scholarship thru graduation. For the record, Liberty DOES NOT discriminate against gays...the Liberty Way just bans sexual immorality. And in my opinion, if I had gotten kicked out for that...well, it would've been my own d**n fault for being stupid.
I went to Liberty with full tuition for undergrad and full ride + stipend for grad school, got a good education and now have a good job. In return, Liberty has an alum who is succeeding in life, makes donations and is not afraid to speak openly about being gay and having an overall positive experience at the school.
If second, or third, chances weren't given...I wouldn't have graduated.
