So there's some good news, and some bad news

Good news:
http://voices.washingtonpost.com/dr-gri ... rc=nl_buzz
Virginia will increase speed limits to 70 mph on 680 miles of interstates by the end of the year.
...
The plan includes most of Interstate 81 and sections of Interstates 64, 66, 77, 85 and 95.
Bad news:
The law also reduced to just 11 mph the margin between the legal speed limit and a reckless driving citation with a mandatory court appearance, prohibitive fines and possible jail time. Virginia law defines any driver going 81 mph or more as reckless.

That seems pretty unreasonable to slap a reckless driving ticket on someone going 11 mph over in any case, but I've got to wonder if that is just applying to the 70 mph zones. Is 11 mph the new standard for every zone? 46 in a 35 is reckless? Who would they be pulling over for non reckless speeding? The guys going 5 mph over? I got pulled over quite a bit in college, and I've had troopers basically tell me that they only pull people over who are going more than 10 over the speed limit. So that's what I set my cruise control for and sure enough, they don't turn their lights on when I go by. But this would change the game.

But on the other hand, maybe it's only that the 81 mph is the current standard for reckless and it's not changing so the article simply did the math specifically for 70 mph roads. This could seriously completely change the way I drive.

Aw, come on--81 in a 45 would have to be considered reckless... :? I'm glad to see it go up for the highways, though. It's been proven that there isn't much gas saved by slowing down to 55.

Actually, slowing down to 55 from even 60 does make a lot of difference... I tried going 55 instead of 60 one day on my route from BoCo to Liberty and it made about a 2 MPG difference. Not significant but if gas keeps going up I may have to do that!

And Jimmy Carter did use the national 55MPH law to force americans to "save gas". And if you haven't taken a look who's in the White House now...

Regardless, 70 is a totally fine speed limit to have. I just wish all the morons at VDOT can figure out why I-81 around Roanoke has so many problems in the 60MPH corridor. (hmmm, let's see here. More cars+lower speed=more cars packed together=more wrecks).

Or maybe it's all about making sure the State Police can do revenue enhancement.

What annoys me more than anything is on rural roads when they have 35MPH speed limits. One, it's a straight road, I don't need to go that slow. Two, even if I went 55 on it, I'd eventually get behind grandpa driving 15...
