There was an additional question that didn't make the cut and ill post it below( in the future i think these addtional notes will be available to subscribers online):
RA: From a personal standpoint, of all the coaches you served under who had the most important effect on you or taught you the most important lessons?
Coach Rocco: Well there are a couple of guys, Al Groh for sure. I played for Al at Wake Forest University; I was a captain down there for him in 1983. I stayed on after I played for him and coached for three years. Then I was reunited with Coach Groh with the Jets in 2000, and then spent 5 years with him at Virginia as his associate head coach, line backing coach and recruiting coordinator. I mean without a doubt Coach Groh in terms of philosophy, he has taught me so much. Al has an amazing ability to just stay focused one the bulls-eye. There can be distractions everywhere or he can have three, four or 5 guys injured on your defense and he will never offer an excuse.
I was strongly influenced by Coach Tom Coughlin; I worked with him at Boston College. He is now the Head Coach of the New York Giants. Coach Groh and Coach Coughlin were both Bill Parcells disciples. They were both on the Giants staff in the 80’s and have gone on from there.
The other guy I would like to mention is Bill McCartney, he was at the University of Colorado and I was there in 1987. He won a national championship a few years later; Bill has since left the coaching profession. He started a Christian movement for men called Promise Keepers, he has written number of books as well. Bill was a man, is a man of great passion. He has unbelievable passion for his faith, he had unbelievable passion for football, and for his family and that was a really special experience for me.
Those are some of the guys that influenced me, they’re a many more, but those are probably the guys who had the biggest impact.
