That could get ricky. What if some pro-abortion group wanted to have a convention there? Could get messy real fast. Tough to meld public and private together without problems. Would LU be OK with some shows that the students might be banned from attending?
What pro-abortion groups go around having conventions?
Ok, let's rephrase: what if a pro-choice politician wanted to have a rally there?
Didn't something like that already happen when Liberty wouldn't let Obama have a rally on property they owned?

They would not allow parking at the LU owned facility but the event still took place at EC Glass

Keep in mind you're talking about "LU owned" and not "rented by LU"

I know you're trying to emphasize that LU wouldn't own it, but it wouldn't be able to exist without a heavy subsidy from LU renting it on a regular basis. They would have some MAJOR clout with whoever does own it. One threat of "we'll take our ball and go home" (which is a card they've played a few times before) and they can get what they want.

Yeah, but if there were no other facility big enough to hold convo, would LU really be able to play that card?

That opens up another good question. If we have to use this facility for convo, then it would have to be very close to the LU campus for that to work. It would be a logistical nightmare otherwise unless they did something drastic like move convo to evening or make it optional. I like to line up my classes all in a row (i.e. morning through afternoon with no gaps) and don't need my day stretched out more due to convocation.

they want to put it near east campus where they were once talking about a shopping center, so it would be close...but i am pretty sure none of the current students need to worry much about it effecting them...this would be a good 5-10 years down the road in my opinion

Yes, I did not mean it to be taken so literally but any of the many groups or even bands or speakers that LU might have a serious problem with. If it is a publically owned facilty general first amendment abd public venue type rights would apply and certainly some things that would not fit the LU values might want to rent the facility. I think LU would have to be OK with that tot he extent that the overall public's standards would allow. That might mean no conventuions for the adult film industry as that would violate community standards too. But most other things would have to be allowed access.

It would

We arent talking about "little old Liberty" any more. We're talking about "campus" being almost double in size once the expansion roads/bridges are complete. All of that property will be unused at the time with the ability to place something like a civic center in a location near 29 hundreds of acres away from even dorms, with access not through campus but 29.

This isnt "inside info" or anything I'm just throwing out logical ideas that are possible. You trade the land needed for the right to use the facility over a period of time. Any of your large campus's are spread out over public property. We're lucky to have thousands of acres.

I'd be more of a fan of expanding the Vines and building a parking deck behind it.

And have a graded convo...freshman and sophomores and first year transfers required to attend all convos. Juniors and Seniors Required to attend on Fridays, when they have ministry chapel for the religion majors and seminary students. Something like that.

My view is, why pay the city to keep renting something year after year...who knows how much that will cost in the long run.

I agree. I think having students attend a required amount of convo's is the best shot at creating a balance. Still have to check in with an RA and have assigned sections.

The only issue is those that have to work. I worked full-time my last two years while I lived off campus. I had to open the store in the mall, which opened at 10:00, or I would have to come in at 12:00 & work until 9:00. No way I was going to go to convo then. I had too much to do.

You can be excused from convo if you're working.

Yup, I missed an entire semester of convo working at the bookstore.
