COMSTOCK -- Midway through the first quarter, Carley Cottingham enters the lineup for the girls basketball team at Three Rivers High. Two minutes later, she receives a pass on the right wing, uses an up-fake to get past a defender and drives for the first basket of her senior season.
A couple of minutes later, Cottingham drives from the left wing and converts an off-balance lay-up.
When she rejoins the game in the second quarter, Cottingham steals the ball and dribbles with her left hand before beginning a crossover move to elude a defender. But she stops suddenly and picks up her dribble.
"I was like: 'Crap,' " she said later. "I was so used to using both hands to fast-break. So I just had to pick the ball up and wait for someone to come back to me."
Cottingham no longer can use both hands to dribble ... or shoot ... or tie her shoes ... or put her long light brown hair in a ponytail ... or do any of the things she did for the first 17 years of her life. Why? Because of the answer to a question she gave Aug. 26 at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit.
