The man who oversees about $40 million worth of Liberty University construction projects annually started out digging ditches at the school 24 years ago.

Charles Spence, LU’s director of planning and new construction, “truly came from the bottom,” before becoming a driving force at the school as it sought city approval this year to expand to 15,000 students and begin dozens of new projects.

“Our goal is to try to get ahead of the curve instead of being behind,” he said in a recent interview. “It goes as far down as scheduling an individual project to planning five to 10 years out.”
