In the coming year, a mother-son team of Liberty University alumni, plus about 20 others, will pedal more than 5,500 miles as part of a journey to benefit their alma mater and promote Christianity.
“I really believe in the vision and the purpose of what the university stands for,” said Judy Bowman, founder of the Lynchburg-based Wheel Power Christian Cyclists.
The group has used cycling trips across the country since 1991 as a platform for raising money for Christian causes. While biking, participants stop along the way to witness to the people they encounter.
“Our whole purpose is to share the gospel,” said Bowman, who started Wheel Power after setting a world record by riding 3,000 miles on a stationary bike at Lynchburg’s Courtside Athletic Club in 7 days, 8 hours and 30 minutes.
Each participant can use 70 percent of the money raised to support any Christian organization, Bowman said.
The other 30 percent goes toward trip expenses.
She and her son, Steve Bowman, who both work for the organization, have chosen to support Liberty when the group pedals from Maine to Florida this fall, and again as they ride cross-country from California to Lynchburg next year.
