I want to build a fire pit in my backyard, just a place to chill out around a fire. Nothing huge or anything. No bonfires or any of that. I live in the city limits though. Is it legal to have open fires in the city limits?

I don't know anything about the legality but from my understanding it would not be considered an open fire since it would be enclosed in the pit.

I knew a guy who had a house right behind city stadium and he had a small pit and had fires there all the time...we would like roast hot dogs and stuff...and hung out...I don't know if it was illegal or anything, but he never got in trouble for it or anything

That's all I wanted to know.

When I moved into my current house, the previous homeowners had dug a hole in the backyard and encircled it with bricks, rocks and various other non-flammable objects/trash. There was some soot in the hole, so I'm assuming it was a fire pit.

Whew boy, those folks had class.

That's not meant to say anything about you, SJ. It's just one of many fond memories I have of how this house was when I first bought it.

The ones at Wal-Mart may say "some assembly required" and are probably much safer than building one in your yard with all the dry grass around.

Nah, I'd build it cause it'd be cheapest. It's getting cooler so it'd be nice to have one.

Sort of on topic, does anyone know where to get a 45 gallon drum for burning? I can't find them anywhere. It's like the ones that everyone uses are 60 years old, do I have to steal one from a farmer or hillbilly?

Totally legal. My roommates and I built a firepit at our old house and we lived in the city. I called the fire department before we did it and they said it was cool, but it couldn't be more then like 6 feet high. We had fires for the past two years and never had any problems from the law.

Dwane Carson had a fire pit back in the day that a bunch of people would come over and chill out on Friday's. I only went once but it was a pretty big bonfire with the pallets and all

FYI for Pyro McFatty:

The city now has a burn ban in effect, including recreational fires. So right now, your fire pit had better not be lit.

That's one of the reasons I was asking in the first place. I knew my town had one because it'd been so dry.

The pyro in my family is my little brother. I'm not a big fan of setting things on fire or blowing stuff up.

I'm proud of how much I blew that toilet up. That was a good one.
