I think that's the larger issue, then. They should have CE floors/halls/dorms designated for seniors, academic achievers, etc. Living in the more quiet Senior Dorms my fourth year was a lifesaver for me. It made living on campus a lot more tolerable.

Casper wrote:Guys, they did not drop the prices for freshmen because they wanted to give them "a deal." All the other rooms on campus were full so they had no other option than to stay on east campus. Due to this, the school did not feel that it was fair to charge them the EC rate when the majority of the people they talked to wanted to stay on the circle but could not because it was full to capacity. I can understand how some of you who are paying the full price would be upset that a freshman with poor planning (waiting until the last second to register) would be "rewarded" with a discount, but by saying the school does not care or has forgotten about the returners is crazy. The leaders at our school not only try and make the best decisions for us everyday but I know that for a fact they are also praying for us. I would say that this is far more than most other schools. Anyways, on a lighter note, maybe next year all the returners should just wait until the end of summer to make their housing arrangements. :D

First off, that reasoning is stupid. It's not my fault the generic brand of toilet paper was full and I had to buy the expensive stuff, but Food Lion still charged me for the good stuff. They should've taken care of their crap (no pun intended) sooner.

Second, a housing staff member was the one who said it was on sale. Unless you come out and say you're his boss or something like that, I'm believing him.

I'm with Casper on this one and your analogy is backwards, SJ. You didn't buy the brand-name TP, instead opting for the generic and now all that's left is the 4-ply Charmin'. So they sell it off at a lower price, so what? That's supply and demand. Hotels, airlines and cruise lines use this strategy all the time. You guys who aren't on East got exactly what you were already willing to pay for so there's no damage done and you really have nothing to complain about. So a freshman caught a break you didn't catch, so what? People catch breaks all the time. It's not like the admin is sitting up there in the mansion laughing at the poor saps that booked their rooms early. They had rooms to fill and they filled 'em. The end.

Where's a religion major when you need one? Didn't Jesus have a parable about workers in a vineyard getting paid different wages that they agreed upon beforehand? That would seem to be a good parallel with the East Campus vs. main campus dorm situation.

I do not work for housing myself. However, my wife does and she was one of the people setting these kids up in their rooms. Believe what you want, but the administration is not out to get returning students. They were put in a tough situation and they did what they thought was the best option available.

When I made the comment about not doing things for kids once they get here, I wasn't just talking about housing. That argument is much deeper than housing.

and it's widely recognized among the student body. it seems like 95% of LU's efforts are towards attracting new students, but they don't do anything for current students. everything they do is towards getting new students.... all the concerts are during CFAW, the food is better at the rot during CFAW, don't get me wrong, i think CFAW is a great idea for recruiting, i just think that once students get here more efforts need to be made to keep them happy. a bunch of students transfer after their freshman year for various reasons, and many who stay are very unhappy. if they want to reach 25,000 students, were going to have to keep the students we get along with recruiting new ones.

there needs to be a better balance between recruiting and retaining

this same thing happened last year, and in a few days there will more than likely be something on the splash page saying they will let kids underage move off campus, just like they did last year. When you do the math, there are 84 beds per campus east building, times the 6 new ones they built is 504 new beds. If we grew by over a thousand, than obviously there is going to be a lack of beds.

but yes, someone could wait until the end of summer to register for a room and get pushed to east, however they might wait too long and not get one or they get stuck with a bad roommate. But at the same time, an upperclassmen whos not 21 yet could wait until the end of summer and move off campus. I Live on east, and i dont care that these kids are getting a discount.

This is just a suggestion regarding the sound problems. When I wanted to study back in the dorm at night, I wore a set of gun mufflers.

I'm sure now you could do even better with a pair of noise-cancelling headphones...although gun mufflers are about $10 and noise cancelling headphones at least $50 I'm guessing.

But they help cut down on the noise...it worked for me.

I wore earplugs in the dorms as well.

One night my roommates woke me up for a fire alarm going off.

They had been trying to wake me up for several minutes.

It was a tough call after that, but I kept wearing 'em.
