A Sea Of Red

This really is going to put the non baseball fans to sleep...but there are a few of us that love baseball and love everything about it...this could be a High School player, College, or Pro...it doesnt matter and it doesnt take away from the fact that you watched and were simply impressed


Here's my list....


Mark McGwire, Sammy Sosa, Griff Jr....really those are the three that stand out in my mind...I had the chance to see Mac and Sam play the year of the homerun chase (and got their autographs!) and I also was at the 99 All-Star game where Mac, Sosa, Griff battled it out in the Derby...that was nuts


Someone I really want to see hit BP though is Ichiro....I hear that guy can hit with power with the best of them in BP and can hit some MONSTER shots


Now that I'm thinking about it someone else who was impressive during BP was Miguel Cabrera...I saw him back during the first few years with the Marlin's and he was very young hitting absolute bombs


Did I hear it on TV or did was it Bl that was saying they saw Hamilton take BP at the Bull's field and put on a show?

Saw Bo Jackson put on a long ball clinic one year in Spring Training.

My Junior and Senior years of HS I lived in the North Hills area of Pittsburgh and could walk to catch a bus at the mall 6 blocks from our house that dropped us off at 3 Rivers stadium. The summer after my Junior year I'm sure I went to at least 40 Pirate games. Youth seats in the outfield were $2. It was festival seating, so we went EARLY, and RAN so we could get the front row seats in the lower level in right field; as close as possible to the great Roberto Clemente. I saw Willie put more than one BP pitch over my head in the top deck in right.

You got to see Pops! Wow...that would have been something...I'm a little young for that...first time I ever met him I swear I think he was already 80 years old...he was a grumpy man too...I'll be the same way though when I reach that age

I was in Baltimore when Barry Bonds was taking BP at Camden Yards. Mrs. Cider wanted to go to the Inner Harbor before the game so I missed it, but I heard that Barry put on quite the show in BP.

I've watched BP for many years and I've seen some incredible shots. But nothing matched a juiced afternoon with Big Mac taking rips. With a pitching coach serving him up 550 foot shots were commonplace. And it wasn't just the distance but how majestic the towering shots were.

Yes, I am old. While Pops put on a show in BP and also hit most of the longest home runs in the history of that ball park, the man we went to see was Clemente. To this day I haven't seen a player to compare with him, and he was in incredible shape and going strong at 38 when his plane went down bringing aid to Nicaraguan earthquake victims.

Should have seen Hamilton's shots at DBAP....I mean multiple bombs.

Not a great photo below, but the building on the right is across the street. Josh put quite a few that hit that building that day.

He passed just before I started going to games regularly at Riverfront. The Buc we feared the most for his power was Cincy native The Cobra. But alas he stunk by the time he joined his hometown club.

Some of the other BP superstars that come to mind were Dale Murphy, Dave Kingman and a guy most of you have never heard of named Nick Esasky. The latter wasn't much of a player but he ripped titanic shots in BP.

And ended the previous season with exactly 3,000 hits; as to Parker, I saw him play for the AAA Charleston Charlies.
