Matt Morgan, a 6-8 forward who played last year as a freshman at St. Bonaventure, has committed to Winthrop.
He will be eligible to practice with the team this season, but cannot play until the 2009-10 season. He’ll have three years eligibility remaining.

The 210-pound Morgan has long arms, is very athletic and has a soft touch around the basket.

Last season, Morgan was fifth on the team in scoring (5.4) and rebounding (3.3)in Atlantic 10 Conference games, impressive numbers considering he averaged just 13.9 minutes per game. He was Atlantic 10 Conference rookie of the week in back to back weeks to begin February.

Morgan hit double figures five times in league games during an eight-game stretch when he averaged 10.4 points, five rebounds and shot 66 percent.

should I be impressed with what they got or should I see what looks like blood in the water? Transfer players are so "rebuilding".

Winthrop's been looking for an additional post since Andy will be gone next year. This appears to be a really good get, he put up some big numbers in the last month of his freshmen campaign (18 and 9 against Charlotte, who has great post height and defense) and won A10 frosh of the week twice in February. He also shoots 75% from the line which probably automatically makes him our best free throw shooter. Maybe even if we blindfolded him.

But panfan may say their St. Bonnie transfer is the gem. Since he didn't play at all and rotted on the bench.

No need to be impressed, at least not yet. Who knows what he's going to contribute at WU. But transfers being so 'rebuilding'? That's a pretty big leap, especially since it isn't like WU is bringing him in to save the day, just as another piece of the roster puzzle, no different than they've done the last 10 years. WU has brought in transfers from coastal, william & mary, odu, gardner-webb, and rice over the course of the last nine or so years, none a part of a rebuilding process. A couple worked out well, a couple didn't, no different than any high school recruit or juco transfer.

Another transfer for the Eagles, this one from Wake. He will be eligible right away with only one year of eligibility remaining.

Stanley, who redshirted as a freshman in 2004-05, played the past three seasons as a reserve for the Deacons and graduated in May with a degree in sociology. He wanted to get master of science degree in physical education with an emphasis on sports management, a program Wake Forest does not offer.

Under NCAA rules, any athlete who wants to attend graduate school can enroll at another university offering his desired program and be eligible to play right away. He’ll be a walk-on, paying his own way with one year of eligibility.

In a very strange twist of fate, McKay appears to be building a program that even Greg Marshall could be proud of, while Peale seems to be practicing the Dunton method.

I don't think that's the case. This kid just fell into Winthrop's lap. Add to that the fact that he's paying his own way and any school on our level would be doing cartwheels to get him.

Sounds like another ACC transfer into the Big South... Maybe Winthrop will let theirs shoot

You're right. He would hate getting Curry, Sanders, Floyd, Weaver, McMasters, and Austin Smith in the same recruiting class. That would really suck.

Who cares what his number were. He's not taking a scholarship and it's another quality athlete that can't help but help the team. If he produces on the court then they got an absolute steal. If he doesn't do much other than provide a good player to practice against and help bring along their younger guys then that's absolutely fantastic for them.

The other kid that transferred to them has three years of eligibility. He'll be able to contribute, and they had a scholarship. It'd be dumb not to take him.

Funny thing is you say no game, yet one of the Winthrop posters who lives in Winston-Salem and works with people that know the Wake program says that he's athletic and will be able to put in quality minutes.

From you, I'm leaving it. You jump around more than any person I've ever seen. First you're defending Dunton up and down and then you take shots at him in this thread. You take shots at BJ Jenkins and automatically assume that incoming freshmen who haven't stepped foot in a class yet are going to be better than him. You act like you're inside the program but if you knew anyone there you would know that Brolin Floyd is the best incoming freshman, right now, and not Curry who you have a massive hard-on for. You somehow think that only Liberty can get recruits and that although Winthrop won the league again last year they're not going to be any good in the future.

I'm going with the guy who works three miles from Wake's campus.
