I know Bl said this in the last thread...but this is pretty important so I wanted to start a thread just about this...

Woods set to have season-ending knee surgery
Tiger Woods has decided to have surgery on his left knee, which will end his 2008 season.
Woods said on his Web site that he will have surgery on his anterior cruciate ligament. He also wrote that he needs time to rehabilitate a double stress fracture of his left tibia, which he said was discovered just before the Memorial Tournament in late May.
And he revealed that he originally ruptured the ACL in 2007 while running at his home in Orlando after the British Open. He said he decided not to have surgery at that point, and he went on to win five of the next six events he entered (through his Target World Challenge in December).

This REALLY stood out to me:

I pray he recovers...this is something that could nag him for the rest of his life...sucks

He's already proven he can win with a bum leg, no doubt a surgically repaired one will be no big deal.

I was listening to the radio and they were talking about an article in which a Dr had been following this and his knee history closely and they think it sounds degenerative. Now obviously this is not his Dr, nor a guy who has ever had access to his med info, but just something to keep your eye on.

Good decision to have the surgery done now. Something tells me he will be fine once he takes some time to really rehab. I, along with many others, have probably watched my last golf tournament of the year. Poor PGA. Ooo, it's a Ryder Cup year, too. Ouch.
Well, I take that back. If Mediate is having a good run in one of the two remaining majors, I'll be pulling for him.

The fact that Tiger Woods was doing as well as he was with a bad knee shows just why he is th best golfer in the world.

I know. If Tiger wanted too, being so athletic, he could probably switch to football or basketball and be the best in those sports. I think he would struggle with baseball.
Golf is a skill. It doesn't require "great athleticism." The best athletes play basketball.
That being said, Tiger might be the best athlete in Golf. He might be the most competitive athlete in the world. He also might be the most mentally tough athlete in the world.

tiger's workout routine includes a benchpress that consists of 3 sets of 12 with 350 on the bar

Athlete - a person trained or gifted in exercises or contests involving physical agility, stamina, or strength; a participant in a sport, exercise, or game requiring physical skill.
I'm pretty sure Tiger falls in that category.

Man, I think some of you guys forget playing PE with all of the Napoleon Dynamite's...I mean I could go to the computer lab right now and take a guy that and put him on the golf course and we'd have entertainment for hours...guys not only do you have to be an athlete but you have to be just as much if not MORE athletic then you need to be to play baseball and that's the ultimate hand eye sport

Tiger is a very good athlete, but I don't think he compares with Lance Armstrong, Michael Jordan or Bo Jackson---just to name a few examples. That's a different type of athlete. Sure those guys will never be as good as Tiger in Golf, but in my opinion they are much more gifted athletes. Bo Jackson may not be able to bowl a perfect game but are you going to tell me that the world's greatest bowler is just as good an athlete? What about ping pong? That requires great skill and agility. Tiger competes in a sport were on a given day he could lose to a guy like Craig Stadler or John Daly. There are good athletes in bowling, shuffle board and baseball as well, but those require different types of skills.

Compares in what way? Was Bo Jackson a better football player and baseball player than Tiger? Absolutely. Is Tiger a better golfer than him? Definitely.
In their respective sports, using their unique individual athletic traits, Tiger Woods is better than all three of those. He's more dominant in his sport than anyone has ever been.

What is interesting is that he tore his ACL last year...
...and it is more than likely the resultant instability which led to the repetitive trauma to his tibia.

Stop acting like you do this for a living.

All around athleticism is what I am talking about. Someone who could win a decathlon. Someone who can run, lift, and jump. Someone that possesses power and speed.
It could be argued that Jack Nicklaus dominated golf as much as Tiger. The same could be said for Ben Hogan during his hay day.
In other sports, Babe Ruth dominated baseball more than Tiger has dominated golf. When Ruth hit 60 home runs he more than tripled the previous single season home run record. I am not saying Ruth was the greatest athlete of all time either. In fact, I believe there are great athletes in baseball but there are other ball players who when they take off there uniform they are kind of ordinary---Greg Maddux for example.

I kinda agree with the "athlete" part...now where I cant agree is "best athlete in his sport" or "Greatest competitor" but sure..maybe Bo Jackson had more athleticism

i still do not think you have to be an athlete or athletic to play the game of golf and be good at it...are there athletic guys who play golf? sure...but its not needed...

you could also say the same for baseball....does john kruk bring back any memories?, or what about that fat tub of goo c.c. sabathia?? these guys are fat slobs who had either good hand/eye coordination or a very good pitching arm. there are different types of athletes. tiger has forced many PGA players to get better physically due to his workout regimen, but tiger is an athlete make no mistake about it, and is by far the most mentally tough out there at this point.

true...you don't have to be very athletic to be a succesful pitcher or DH for that matter....but its far more common for golf...any "sport" where you can smoke while you're playing and still be successful just loses its credibility as a true sport to me...and I LOVE to golf...and really wish i had the time (and money) to play...its been way too long

Babe Ruth
Done
I agree Babe Ruth was more dominant. Here's what I pose to you though: which is more impressive, Babe Ruth dominating the way he did over the lower level of competition at the time or Tiger dominating the way he does over an greatly increased level of competition?
I honestly have to think about it.

You mentioned fat baseball players and left out David Wells? He is the first example to use.

does it really matter what fat baseball player you use?? there are plenty more out there that could be named.
