ATLANTA -- The NFL officially notified its players union on Tuesday that it will opt out of the current collective bargaining agreement, which could lead to a season without a salary cap in 2010 and a possible lockout in 2011.



Owners voted unanimously Tuesday morning to opt out of the deal, which was extended in March 2006. The NFL had until November to opt out, but decided to do it early instead of waiting for the deadline

Could be really good for football or reeeeally bad. I seriously doubt the owners will let an uncapped year take place but if they can work in some kind of rookie cap (The Falcon's signed Ryan to a deal in the neigborhood of something like $35 million garunteed. Absurd!). Rumors are that they are pushing for a 17th game as well.

Upshaw has never been in a weaker position and the owners are looking to take full advantage.

Rocketfan and I were discussing the ramifications yesterday, and we decided if the players strike, the replacement players would be a lot of fun to watch. You'd see all sorts of guys who you followed in college that just weren't good enough for the NFL. It wouldn't be serious NFL but it would be very entertaining for everybody none the less. The only thing I'm worried about is the uncapped season in 2010.

The replacement players were a boon for LU football that saw a number of former Flames get their NFL opportunities during the last strike.
