The coach of Kawamoto technical high school threw in the towel to spare his pitcher’s arm with his team losing 66-0 with just one batter out in the bottom of the second.

I've had games ended, but the most we were up was 33-0.

What I don't get, is why they didn't bring in a reliever around the 30-run mark? What did that pitcher do to tick off the coach that bad?

The kid was already at the 250 pitch mark in the second inning! The coach didn't want to risk hurting his arm by continuing the game. I would think at 250 in such a short timeframe there would be some risk already there.

The dude is probably going to have his arm in ice for a week as is.

Once you hit the 30 run mark in the first you should have some sort of mercy rule in place. Its not fun even for the ones scoring at will at that point.

I wouldn't have let my kid throw that many. Are his parents total idiots or what? How about the coach? I would have personally pulled my kid!

As I understand it, this kid was money for the first four pitches. It was the last 246 that got him.

Ball 4.....ball 8.......ball 12.....boy, I just don't see how they can lay off pitches that close...

I've seen a kid throw 150-175 pitches in a game like that. He's throwing less than BP speed so it doesn't really hurt him. It's not like he's straining himself throwing as hard as he can.

The Japanese are notorious for throwing their kids for very long outings. When Dice-K was in high school he grew to mythical status during the Koshien he 148 pitches in a complete game. The next day he threw 250 pitches over 17 innings. The following day he played outfield but threw 15 pitches in the 9th. The following day in the championship game he threw a complete game 200+ pitch no-hitter. That is absolutely ridiculous. Obviously it didn't cause any damage to his arm but I am sure it could have. He threw over 600 pitches over 4 days in high school! When I was in school a kid on my team threw a no-hitter in the semi-finals then threw a complete game the next day to win the state championship and we thought that was pretty crazy but that doesn't come close to what Dice-K did.

There are always exceptions. To me it just isn't worth the health of a young kid to put up a W.

Hey, what gives? The article says NOTHING about the losing coach committing ritual suicide after such a disgrace. Not only was his team defeated, he actually surrendered without ordering a banzai charge on the opposing dugout. And I thought this was Japan...

66 runs in 2 innings is what kind of ERA for the starting pitcher? I'm guessing a 297.00 ERA (33 runs times 9 innings). Am I close or way off? Paging Fumble or a math major...

According to the article they credited the winning team with only 9-0

its actually 66 over 1.3 so...

ERA = 456.92
