that wreck looked worse than Dale Earnhardt's if I remember correctly. I can't believe he walked away. he's very lucky

The impact with the wall certainly appeared to be much harder than the fatal Earnhardt crash. All of the rolling looks spectacular, but is actually pretty harmless with the roll cages and restraints they have. So much has changed since Earnhardt's death. The "safer barrier" and head and neck restraints undoubtebly saved McDowell's life.

Good gracious. That was one heck of an accident. Did he have any injuries at all?

Dale Sr.'s life probably would've been saved with a HANS device. I'm sure the open faced helmet didnt help. Also, he hit the SAFER barriers, not a concrete wall. Further, the car rolled and disintegrated to dissipate energy, further lessening the blow.

All in all, him walking away is due in large part to the MUCH increased focus on safety following the untimely passing of the MAN.

Dale Sr. and Adam Petty have both contributed to the increased safety precautions in NASCAR. They'd both be alive today if their accidents happened with the precautions that they've got in place now.

And Kenny Irwin in Loudon, 2 months after Petty died.

At the same point though its not like people didnt have issues before that, even before Adam and Kenny and Dale. You got Eric Martin, JD McDuffie(for the oldies), Neil Bonnet, Blaise Alexander, John Nemecheck, Tony Roper, Russell Phillips all within a span of 10 to 15 years all suffering head injuries from a head on collision.

Ernie Irvan, Jerry Nadeau, Ricky Craven, and Steve Park all had serious injuries that could have been prevented as well. It really wasnt until Earnhardt's death that the focus became safety.

At the same point the risk has been a part of NASCAR and regardless of how safe the cars get well always have a chance of something going wrong.
