Remember that roommate you had back in the day? He was probably the guy you didn't meet until the last night before classes started the next day. The two of you came from completely different backgrounds and yet you somehow ended up hanging out together a lot and kind of became friends. Not super-close or anything, but definitely friends. The years passed and you got older and you stayed that way but then, after graduation, you went one direction, they went another and you really didn't keep in touch all that well. You lived your life, went out and got a decent job, met a sweet lady, began a good life, basically started living the white bread dream and never really thought about ol' what's-his-name that much. Then, one day, you run into a mutual friend and you find out that your old roommate isn't doing so good. Things just aren't working out so well for them. A few months and years go by and you go back to homecoming and you actually see your old friend and find out things are worse than you thought they were. He's lost his latest job, his wife just left him, he owes money and, despite all his best efforts, everything he touches just seems to ultimately turn to crap. He tells you all this and, of course, you listen to him sympathetically. In the end, you promise to keep in touch and -- the old church foyer standby -- promise to pray for him. And you mean it, you really do.
But, the truth is that when you're driving home that night and laying your head on the pillow and thinking your last conscious thoughts of the day, the only thing that's really going through your mind is how unbelievably glad you are that it was somebody else and not you.

That's how I feel about VMI athletics.

It was an analogy, you unimaginative [* Sly Edit *]. It wasn't so very long ago that LU and VMI were pretty much in the same position. Completely different histories and traditions, yet lumped in together in the Big South and trying to make the best of it. For a while there, things were pretty even. I give you, as an example, the epic miracle game -- or epic chokefest, if you were on the VMI side -- that Liberty won in '03 or the 10-7 nailbiter that they won in '05.
Today, however, I don't think that there's any question that LU and VMI are on completely different playing fields (note: that was a metaphor; physically, the two programs may literally be on the same field but, in every other sense, not really). The relative directions of the two programs are polar opposites and, given the right or wrong set of circumstances, it really could have gone the other way.

VMI head football coach Jim Reid has accepted the linebackers coaching position with the NFL’s Miami Dolphins and is resigning his current position at the Institute. VMI athletic director Donny White made the announcement Wednesday.

Reid, who coached the Keydets for the past two seasons, will join new Dolphins head coach Tony Sparano’s staff immediately.

Actually, I think the analogy should go as follows:

You're a new guy at work. You're fresh out of business school, finished your internship, and you're ready to go. One of the other employees is, uh, Shelly Levine. Levine is an older fellow, probably close to retirement, but he lost his job so now he's working at this step-up from entry-level position, his middle-age kids don't talk to him, wife left him... and he used to be a respected salesman in the business back in the day.

Well, you're doing quite well for yourself, you've made a bunch of sales, and you're hoping for a promotion to Corporate. Levine has become a friend of yours, but he is really down on his luck, but he's working hard and making some sales because he's got some good leads on the most presitigious properties in the area, the Glengarry leads. And you know that those leads will turn his luck around.

Well, today, Shelly Levine lost those Glengarry leads. It's sad to see this from your desk, but hey -- you got your steak knives for being Salesman of the Year, you know?
