This was in Lynchburg's paper today. At the cost of $52 million, the expansion project would add over 10,000 seats to the current stadium that seats 15,778. According to the article, the expansion would also incude a new press box, luxury seats, & new lights. Construction would begin after the 2008 season and be completed by 2011.

I saw that as well. Wonder if that means they're taking steps to try to move up to I-A?

They are certainly positioning themselves nicely for any movement. That 24k alignment could be easily adjusted to over 30k. I have to admit I love the way JMU seems to build their infrastructure athletically the right way.

That's a huge expansion of that side of the stadium. Back when I attended, that was originally all bleachers seating. It actually looks like something LU could do with one side.

Take a look at the stadium plan. If you look closely you can see what used to be a track around the field. The massive expansion has come at the expense of 8 other sports at JMU.

they have a brandy new facility including a soccer field- they just moved it from the football stadium (like most programs are doing)

No- I'm not confused. They dropped the men's track team. One of my friend's brothers ran there and was told in the middle of his junior year he could either transfer for his final year, or stay at JMU and keep his scholorship. He stayed and didn't get to run his senior year.

Bourne says the school is not in step with the education amendment, passed 35 years ago, that requires equitable opportunity for male and female athletes at schools that get federal money. The best way for JMU to avoid potential lawsuits, he says, was to eliminate seven nonrevenue men's sports - swimming, wrestling, cross country, indoor track, outdoor track, gymnastics and archery. Women's gymnastics, archery and fencing are also being cut, but for reasons unrelated to Title IX.

Everyone knows they could have cut one or two programs to comply, but they went for 10 (sorry, I said 8 before) to be able to expand the football program. People have been saying that since the decision was made.

If that's what it takes to get our football team to DI-A (or whatever it is called now) then it is not worth it!

Yes...they dropped track and some other programs to get in Title IX compliance. There were also a lot of other athletic issues about 7-8 years ago they had to address as well.

I'm actually shocked not to see tennis as one of the men's sports dropped. West Virginia U. dropped Men's tennis a few years ago for the same reason I think.

Anyway, if/when LU decides to make the move, I'm sure Barber and Jerry Jr., or whoever's in charge at that point, will be able to do it without cutting successful programs.

They dropped the Rifle program, too. That one became a huge issue in Morgantown, and the program is back now.

Rifle is a non-gender specific sport...and actually counts TOWARDS Title IX compliance.
