Page2 on ESPN listed the best seasons ever, and I had NO IDEA Wilt was this good...

1. Wilt Chamberlain, Philadelphia Warriors, 1961-62
Chamberlain averaged 50.4 points and 25.7 rebounds. He set the NBA record with 4,029 points -- Michael Jordan is the only other player in league history to crack even 3,000. Chamberlain scored 50-plus points 45 times. Just how impressive is that? Michael Jordan cracked 50 points 37 times in his entire career. Chamberlain's 100 points on March 2 against the Knicks is perhaps the most famous single-game performance in sports history. Chamberlain also logged 48.5 minutes per game, playing all but eight minutes the entire season. To put all this in perspective, take Tim Duncan's best scoring and rebounding season -- then double it.

Yeah I've always wished I could have seen the guy play.

As amazing as those stats are, he probably scored WAY more during that season than those numbers even begin to describe.

Seriously the Old Hags on this board can attest to how dominant he was back in the day. He was seriously a head of his time.

He also lead the league in assists one season because people were saying he couldn't pass...

Strange, but true.

I remember that year he played a lot in the high post and would hold the ball out like a grapefruit in one huge mitt while players cut to the basket until he found someone open.

There is no doubt that Wilt's numbers were so ridiculous because there just weren't other big men (except Russell) who could match his combination of size and athleticism. There are more now (and some bigger) but anyone who thinks he wouldn't have been a force in today's NBA is IMHO dead wrong.

old flame is right....other than russel, there were a lack of big centers in the nba at that time...him and bill dominated....wilt a bit more obviously...

but thats not to take anything away from the man....one of my top 3...

Another awesome stat for Wilt is the fact that he NEVER fouled out of a game. NEVER!!!

Because that would've meant that he would've had to put some effort into defense.
