#9 Pitt vs. #7 Duke

Duke choked away a 10+ point second-half lead, losing to Pitt 65-64 off a Levance Fields 3 pointer with 4.7 seconds to go. Scheyer took a leaning three and missed by a lot then tried a desperation tip in from near the FT line on the Dookies final possession.

Funny. I turned that game off during halftime. They must have gone cold at some point in the second half because they were cruising fairly well in the first.

Pitt D came up huge, Dookies offense wasn\'t clicking as well, and Blair is an absolute beast on the boards. Plus Henderson went to the FT line quite a few times in crunch time and he sucks at free throws.

yea. blair killed them. duke did not shoot as well from 3 as they usually do. our best penetrators (nelson and henderson) are horrible free throw shooters. with an off shooting night (from the field and the FT line), and an opposing player grabbing 20 boards... the devils couldn't pull through tonight.

i would not say that pitt's D came up huge. the "dookies" missed multiple 5-10ft. jump shots, blair dominated the defensive and offensive boards. henderson and nelson drove the lane multiple times, any timed with ease.
free throws were another problem... among the many for duke.

Blair is a fantastic player.

congrats to pitt, but that oviously wasn't a true gauge of duke, who went 4-19 from the three. By the way, did anyone see Blair's takedown of singler?what was up with that? can anybody say thug ball?

I noticed that k ONLY played king for 11 minutes and smith for 13 mins, when duke needed a shooting spark. He also gave ice cold scheyer the bal for the last shot..baaad coaching

Seems like a good win for Pitt, but come later in the season I'm sure they will be exposed as frauds like they usually are.

That's how Pitt rolls. The ACC is not like the Big East. One tends to be finesse and the other tends to be more physical. Advantage goes to whichever way the refs are gonna call it. There were a lot of low percentage shots being taken by Duke at the end of that game. They acutally were hitting them but they just didn't hit enough of them at the end of regulation. Also, whoever that was (scheyer I think?) shot the "buzzer beater" with like 3 seconds left on the clock. They had plenty of time to drive the entire length of the court after Fields hit that 3.

So since so many of you watched this game, do you agree that something needs to be done about flopping? It is seriously ruining how defense is supposed to be played in basketball. In soccer, it got so bad that they give a card to the one taking a dive. Basketball is on the verge of needing something similar. Like calling a PF on the flopper. When your first line of defense is moving into somebody's way so that you can fall backwards, it's getting pretty pathetic.

Duke is notorious for it, however, I didn't see a lot last night. Scheyer got bullied around a lot last night but he normally is on the ground becaue he is so small.

9 attempts by Dook last night.....that is more than a few
it no longer becomes a player control foul....it's "let's just somehow get in front of them and fall to make it appear they are out of control"
all that matters was Pitt's D coming up big in the second half

You're blinded by your Duke hatred. Duke tried to take charges and they were called like they were in any other game. Take off your Carolina-blue glasses for a minute and actually watch the game for what it is.

umm...what the heck are you talking about??? They flopped all night!!
That is what they do.....if you noticed last night, Jay Bilas even said Dook drew the charge!! That means Dook did the action, not Pitt....
once again, Dook is flopping and their fans are too blind to see

It's not just duke though, although they are surely kings of it. Most teams are starting to "try" to draw these fouls. I guess I don't blame them for taking advantage of it like they do (although it does make them look like pansies), but it certainly goes against the spirit of the rule, which is to keep the ball handler in control.

Battier started it with Duke. They've been bad about it for years.

everyone flops. more power to the man that has the brains to think "charge" before "block a.k.a. hack" any day.
i mean, does duke have every official in college basketball on their side?? no.
if flopping is going work in their favor, why the heck wouldn't they do it? if it was working for ANYONE, why wouldn't they do it?
i'd give a team credit that attempted to take 9 charges (whether they were actual charges or complete acting jobs) before i'd give a team credit that committed 35 fouls. wouldn't you?

Like I said, it's tough to fault them for doing it other than it obviously not being what the rule was intended for.. But I'm saying that it rewards a team for not playing defense, and punishes an offense for attacking the basket. It's hurting the game and it's not fun to watch.

its just part of the game. we practiced flopping in high school bball practice.
the fix for it is do what the nba did, put that line in the lane.

I guess.....we practiced that to prepare against James Lang (didn't workout....the refs laughed when someone tried to take a charge on someone who outweighed them by 50-100 pounds!!

I remember Sheldon Williams was the king of hack and foul....he just never got the fouls called on him
Luccon got it right.....it rewards a team that plays bad defense and punishes the offense that attacks the basket

I hate flopping in basketball just as much as I hate diving in soccer. It ruins the game. All it's doing is trying to get a cheap penalty/foul called on the opposing team. In soccer, you can get a yellow or red card for a dive. That's the equivalent of getting a technical or two technicals. I absolutely hate it when people fall down after barely being touched. Play the game the way it's supposed to be played. And I mean that regardless of team.

do you bash just to get others fired up? couldn't you have made your point without this statement? it's difficult to not publicly stereotype certain fans when stuff like that is said.
as far as flopping goes... if i was a college basketball player, and i knew that flopping would go in my favor half the time, i'd do it. that strategy is no different than pounding the ball down low on a big man who is already in foul trouble. i don't at all think it ruins the game. when it's in favor of my team it gets me hyped up... when it's in favor of the opposing team it ticks me off. sounds like every other play of any sports game.

By that line of thinking, if you were a Major League Baseball player in the late 90's you would've taken steroids or HGH too. It would go in your favor and wasn't against the rules.
