The Heat Academy

Has anybody else ever heard of this place? It's like a prep school I think. Only it's just for basketball. If you click on the academics link it even says (optional) right next to it. How is this in anyway legit? They have a PO box in martinsville, but I don't see a physical location. I guess it's there.

And obviously this was brought to my attention because they have a very high profile recruit that Uconn is trying to bag. I don't know, it seems like it's on a level below "diploma mill" in terms of legitimacy.

after some more searching, the wapo just did an article about the place yesterday. What a coincidence.

An Academy Devoted To Playing Basketball
By Eli Saslow
Washington Post Staff Writer

MARTINSVILLE, Va. -- After two hours of basketball practice, a group trip downtown to pay the electric bill, grocery shopping, napping and the second hamburger-centric meal of the day, school finally started here at the Heat Basketball Academy.
Sort of.

I like that move LUconn...post something you just read in the Washington Post and then a post later be like "Ohh look a here, the Post just did an article on that!" so it seems like you're Mr current events!

Hot prospects play in Martinsville club
By Aaron McFarling
981-3124
MARTINSVILLE -- Ater Majok taps his size-17 foot to the beat as Michael Jackson plays softly on the radio.
Keep on with the force don't stop,
Don't stop till you get enough.
C.W. Elliott steers the white van around sharp turns on a country road. He is driving three very large men to a basketball game, and they are running a little behind. The uniforms weren't quite dry yet, but he had pulled them from the laundromat anyway. There's no time. Got to keep moving.
Don't stop till you get enough.
Two players from Roanoke. Four from Australia. Two from Charlotte, N.C. One from Nigeria. One from just outside Atlanta. One from Franklin County. It's an odd mix they've got on this team, but it's working to a degree few could have envisioned a year ago when the program began.

Actually, I was reading about the recruitment of Ater Majok and somebody mentioned something funny about the team he was playing for. But I will have to try that in the future so you will all be impressed with me.
