At least 20 Florida State football players will be suspended from playing against Kentucky in the Dec. 31 Gaylord Hotels Music City Bowl, as well as the first three games of the 2008 season, for their roles in an academic cheating scandal involving an Internet-based course, a source with knowledge of the situation said Tuesday morning.

The thing that no one is pointing out is that more than 50% of the general student body does the same exact thing on internet tests. I knew people in my New Testament class that never came to class, but they got around their friends to take the tests and they made A's on the test when I was making lower grades because I was doing the tests without notes or other help. That doesn't make it right, just means that these FSU kids got caught. If the professor is going to be lazy and put the test online, the kids are going to be lazy and take the easy way out.

So students are sharing their LU network passwords with each other?

That is such a bad idea for so many reasons.

No, they're not sharing their passwords. They're just getting in a group in a computer lab or getting laptops together, etc and then saying, "Hey, I think the answer to #5 is C" and they all mark C.

exactly SJ....which is why athletes should probably avoid classes that have internet testing if at all possible...

with that said its not like they didn't know they shouldn't do it...even though everybody does it...its the way it is...

I see. So, professors on FlameFans, is this a known issue among faculty? When you give an Internet-based test, are you assuming it is automatically a group assignment?

No. They tell us to do it by ourselves.

Oh the modern world of technology and how it relates to cheating. In the old days(before computers) it was psst what is the answer to a fellow student, what is the answer to question xx.
Of course when the teachers was not looking etc.

It depends on the teacher.. but most of them, no helps of any sort are allowed.

Well, when I was there they would allow you to use your book and notes, just not other people. They were also timed, so you couldn't look up every answer.

Thats the way the MBA program is...open book, open notes, sometimes the prof will say no other people (but its kinda hard to have other people help when everyone else in the class is in California, Iraq, Maine, Florida, Alaska, Hawaii, anyplace thats far away from Lynchburg) but generally thats the way it is.

I don't understand how athletic administrators can be so daft. There are enough joke college classes around that athletes should know and take, to prevent situations like this from happening.

I mean, seriously, what was that college course at UGA a few years ago? "How many points is a three-pointer worth?"

"closed book, individual" for the all tests and quizzes. i have seen a transition to "open book, open note, individual." never in groups. the tests and quizzes have become significantly more difficult since most profs. have figured the student is going to use notes and the book regardless of what is said.

Yep...I finished my Masters in August & this is the transition I noticed as well. It makes sense because honestly, how could you tell if someone in NY, California, or Japan used their book or not?

Yup...this explains the major disparity between my test grades and my paper grades. I have no problem writing great papers and discussion board posts, but those tests are killer. Class averages tend to be between 65-70% on them.

We're talking residential classes though. Classes that meet on campus but put their tests online. It's always been closed everything, but that didn't stop other people.

i have only had one class residential that has put tests online. the tests were the same, except:

1.) they were timed
2.) same questions but different order of questions
3.) the choices for questions were the same, but in a different order (the 5 choices were the same, but A, B, C, D, E was always in a different order)
4.) you were only allowed to take the test within a ... say ... 5 hour period (i.e. it was only open to be taken from 7pm-midnight)

this made it extremely difficult to cheat.

I'm talking residential classes as well. I've had residential classes with online tests which were open book, open notes.

with the format i just mentioned, open book and notes might help, but group work would take some serious hustle and planning.

Ours was open until the end of the weekend. I don't know if the questions were changed or anything like that.
