Receiver jumps to catch the ball near the sideline. He reaches down to get his feet in before the line but the defender pushes him out. Why is this a catch? It's got to be one of the dumbest rules in football.

It is up to the replay official's interp. I've seen the NFL call that, before...but not yesterday.

I see it all the time. I'm not really talking about any one circumstance (I think you're thinking of the ending of the Brown's game?) but the mere idea of the defense not being able to push you out of bounds so that you can't complete the catch is ridiculous.

i waiver on this rule. i think it makes sense. but there are so many rules that handcuff the corner backs these days that if one had to go, that would be a good one...

I look at it like this...


If a receiver jumps in the air 5 yards or so in bounds....what is keeping me from holding him in the air until I reach out of bounds? Then its no catch...thats when I have a problem with not having the rule

well, that's different. Like you can't pick up a ball carrier and carry them to the endzone and claim a safety.

right...but we're talking about forward motion...although I dont think you could call that with something as quick as this play would be...I dont know though

but really when you hear announcers talk about it they say something like "the receiver would have come down in bounds if the defender hadn't pushed him out, he's got to allow him to come down". But in the middle of the field a SS just has to wait for the receiver to put a finger on the ball before he takes his head off. You shouldn't have to allow the receiver to do anything once they touch it.

I like the college rule. No such thing as a force out, but you only need to get one foot in.

yeah...thats a point I've never thought about...your correct...it should be once they touch the ball
