Unfortunately, we're stuck with the current Bowl Championship Series for the time being. But that doesn't mean we can't dream about what a real playoff would entail and the magic it would produce each December and January.

I tried something similar to that last year. After some tweaking I came up with the system that bred my Heisman Bowl discussions:

6 BCS conference champs
10 at large
Seeded 1-16

I don't know why on earth you would limit it to 16 teams.

There are 119 FBS football teams, every other sport brings at least a quarter, or up to a half, of their teams to the playoffs, so how about...

32 teams

11 Conference Champions
21 At Large Teams

Week 1 (Round of 32) Played the 2nd week of December
Week 2 (Round of 16) Played the 3rd week of December
Week 3 (Round of 8) Played the Last week of December
Week 4 (Round of 4) Played the first weekend in January
Week 5 (Championship) Played in second weekend of January

That goes barely past the time it takes to play all of these bowl games, and gives a fair shot to pretty much every team that makes the top 25.

Plus, you can use Bowl Tie-In's for the First Two Rounds (gotta think about the money aspect)
