But in recent years, student attendance at Duke men’s basketball games has slipped. And last year, when Duke finished 22-11, there were empty spaces in the student sections for more than half the games.

Television viewers often can't tell that some seats are empty because the gaps are in the corners of the bleachers and out of view.

Seems to me, based on reading the article, that the problem stems from students assuming tickets aren't available, which they've just implemented a system to fix. Duke is a pretty small school, though, so maybe the fans are just that fickle.

Well, they said they've seen a decline over the last few years....just more abrupt last season.

I just get tired of hearing they have the best fans.....when only one side, lower level contains those students.....talking with & reading from alumni, they are becoming more embarrassed by the crazies.....seems they care more about being seen or being clever, than actually cheering for their team.

i agree with scorch that the problem is students assuming they won't get in. maybe this new setup will work.

1.) there is one long side full of students, one end for grads and one end for the band. that other long side is almost half students.

2.) if duke wants to spend their time worrying about something, they'll worry about the hundreds of seats that are empty in the upper level almost EVERY game. they only want to open tickets up to the iron dukes that live in other states, then the average joe can't get a ticket to a basketball game because mr. and mrs. high-roller (who come to maybe 4 games a year) have all the tickets.

3.) i'd rather stand, sit or lay in a full or empty cameron, than set foot anywhere near the university of north carboro or their dome.

Either is better than State.

i've never been to a state game, but from TV it never usually seems very rowdy. i bet they'll be a little more rowdy this year though...

It works for a Hurricanes game, but when I went to see LU at NCSU a few years back, it felt like I was way too far away from the game.

LU against NCSU was at Reynolds.....not the RBC. It was a throwback game or something. The RBC Center is a much different atmosphere.

Uh, no. I was at the RBC when I attended the game. December 17, 1999. LU lost 85 to 50. Look it up.

both of you are correct. i do believe the last matchup was at reynolds though. i too went to that beatdown at the RBC. a great hockey venue, but not great for hoops.

I understand, Bry.....it can be overwhelming to jump from a high school gym to the 21,750 seat Dean Dome.

I don't mind Cow College. To me, they are still the main rival with UNC. But, I don't "hate" them. However, I want the Heels to beat them every time they play. I can cheer for State when they are not playing Carolina....but, it doesn't upset me if State loses, either.

I think they are changing their image to the "Merlot & Brie" folks....you know, bringing it in to the new century.

I don't have a problem with State either, I just like making fun of them.
