The injury bug was not kind to Barclay Radebaugh and the Bucs last year, and it ended up leading to a last place finish and a team that only had 8 players dressed out to finish the year. Chris Moore had been emerging as one of the best shooting guards in the conference, but he missed the entire last half of the year with a broken foot. And Vernon Huger led CSU in rebounding two years ago, but never saw the floor last year, also because of a broken foot. The return of those two players, along with the maturation of several young players from last year and a solid recruiting class gives the Bucs some hope to get out of the cellar this year, but do they have enough firepower to jump up much further?
Moore will be the anchor of the team. He has proven to be a very strong outside shooter and a good leader for the Bucs program. He'll share the backcourt with a couple of streaky shooters who return to the team (Shelton Carter and Terrance Grier), along with a solid crew of freshmen. The freshmen are led by Tovi Bailey and Jamarco Warren. Bailey and Warren are a pair of all-state Georgia products that both can score and distribute the ball from the point guard position. They should help CSU survive the loss of Dwayne Jackson and Donnell Covington, though they will likely experience some growing pains. Austin Johnson will see some time in the backcourt as well, and comes in with a reputation of being a great outside shooter. Omar Carter will likely be battling for minutes in the third guard/small forward spot with Shelton Carter and Grier.
Huger brings some toughness and strong rebounding to the paint and his return should help the Bucs on both ends of the court. In his absence last year, Giedrius Knysas became a very productive inside player for CSU and he will likely be one of the top scorers for the Bucs this year. Quinton Goods will finally see some action this year, after having to sit out last year as a transfer from ECU. He will be battling with returning sophomores Brandon Macklin, Marquise DuVall, and Shawn Outen for playing time behind Huger and Knysas. All four bring solid size, strength, and athleticism to the paint, but none are very polished as offensive players.
Radebaugh sounds excited about his team in many of the previews I have read. I definitely think they'll be improved, and they have some potential to surprise and finish higher if they can avoid injury and get some production from their younger players. But they will likely be relying on freshmen at the point guard spot and I have a hard time seeing them having alot of consistant success because of that.
My Prediction:
14-15 overall, 5-9 in the Big South; Seventh place finish; Will be eliminated in the first round of the Big South Tournament
