NEW YORK -- Joe Torre is out as manager of the New York Yankees, rejecting a substantial pay cut after the team failed to make it past the first round of the playoffs for the third straight year.

Torre turned down a $5 million, one-year contract Thursday that still would have made him the highest-paid manager in baseball.

He will be fairly busy counting all the $$$ he made this year. It's got to be tough.

Being a yanks fan, I hate this, but I hope we get Mattingly.

Honestly I just dont think Don's ready yet...he needs about 2 more years, UNLESS they can keep a lot of the staff they have that can help him along...at one point they had 4 former major league managers, although if they do it that way he could lose some respect


I'm glad Joe turned it down...he deserved better than what he got, and so does A-Rod...the media was never fair to him until he began to have the best season any 3rd baseman has ever had in NY...hopefully he'll leave to and go to Chi town and collect that HUGE paycheck that may include some ownership stake

Uhhh ARod got 28 Mil a year..... He got more than he deserved. Say what you want about the media but Id rather be looked at as a failure by any baseball fan(which he wasnt, he just had too high expectations) and have 140 some Million bucks than whatever "fair" is for him.

Joe definitely got the shaft in terms of what he got paid(offer was at least 2 to 3 Mil under what he made last year) but hed still be the top paid manager. I dont know if that job is worth 5 mil for anyone though.

I still expect Torre to land back in STL.

I think the biggest slap in Joe's face was the fact that they only offered him a one year contract. 12 straight playoff appearances and SEVERAL WS rings should get you more than a one year contract IMO. Joe probably exited the Yankees at the right time and will be considered among the all time great in baseball history.

Sports talk guys up here saying last night that you may see a "Bowa" type come in for a year or so and then Mattingly come in after that to be the "real" guy.

not really sure @ the logic there- but I suppose the point is to let someone else fail first, then bring in the good guy to fix everything. No one seems to think DM is ready yet.

then again- I hate the Yanks and Mets, so I don't care.

Who knows what will happen, but i think the biggest laugher of all is a NY manager can be "low balled" with a 5million dollar offer and just across town Willie Randolph makes less than 1 million!

Its the years that is a slap in the face....not the money

It wasnt a fair deal....you think a hall of fame manager that's led you to the post season needs incentives? That's a cop out to save face with the fans that pull for Joe

I don't think Torre ever coaches again. I hope Girardi gets the job---I don't think Donnie is ready. Torre's turned down the offer supposedly because it was only one year--per NY Daily News.

I see Hank Steinbrenner is popin off at the mouth to Torre...it's simply the way he was raised to not have any respect for anyone....what have you done for me today...forget the last 12 years...how about today
