Hoosiers lose scholarship, Sampson loses raise over calls


INDIANAPOLIS -- Telephone calls to basketball recruits have landed Indiana coach Kelvin Sampson in trouble again and will cost the team a scholarship and Sampson a scheduled $500,000 raise.

Indiana announced Sunday that the school's basketball staff exceeded NCAA limits on calls to recruits during the past year -- a period during which Sampson was prohibited from off-campus recruiting because of excessive recruiting calls when he was coaching at Oklahoma.

The new violations happened on about 10 occasions when an IU assistant coach started three-way calls that connected Sampson into an ongoing recruiting conversation with recruits, their parents or coaches, school officials said.

"We determined that the impermissible calls occurred because some staff members did not fully comply with the sanctions they were operating under," IU athletic director Rick Greenspan said in a school statement. "We are addressing the problem, and we are voluntarily extending these limitations on recruiting for another season to ensure that the full effect of NCAA restrictions or recruiting is realized."

Assistant Rob Senderoff, who set up the three-way calls, will be banned for a year from recruiting off campus and making phone calls. He also won't receive a bonus and cannot receive a salary increase next year.

Good to hear about Meyer

This is about all I saw about Meyer...

Senderoff handled a lot of the recruiting responsibilities with assistants Ray McCallum and Jeff Meyer.

This was interesting

Sampson called the mistakes by the staff "sloppiness."

Do I think JM is 100% innocent from NCAA violations they've been caught with or even those that the NCAA doesnt know? Probably not, but I blame Sampson...its got to be a tough situation for JM when your boss is telling you to do something even though you know it's against NCAA


Not to mention now it looks like the roll of Senderoff will be re-assigned and now others will have to pick up the slack in recruiting, Sampson is not going to all of the sudden decide to follow all of the rules (he never has) and I'm sure JM will find himself in a situation where he's asked to do something he knows he shouldnt.

Wouldn't it be great if Indiana cut Sampson loose and promoted our own Jeff Meyer to head coach? That would make most of us want to do

More than likely, they would do an extensive search to get the next "big name" flavor of the month. IU head coach is a job that a very small talent pool will ever get the chance to get. Promoting within is how Mike Davis got the position and he seemed to be in over his head most of the time even when they got to the NCAA finals. I don't think they would want to do that again other than an interim basis. Also Jeff is not next in line I don't think. I think McCallum is.
